I wonder what the numbers are for the Iranian population before and after the revolution.

In the late 1930’s, Stalin ordered an accurate census in order to prepare for the possible war with Germany. When his census takers reported the actual Soviet population numbers - after the various purges and the starvation in the Ukraine - Stalin became angry that the numbers were so low compared to his expectations. Typically, Stalin ordered the census takers shot.

The present government of Iran seems to be cast in that Stalinist mold.

Anyone who can get out leaves. There are few jobs for educated people. I worked with a guy in the 80s whose parents left the country so that he would not be used as a landmine-tripping tool in the war with Iraq.
