ObamaCare Backfire? Big Insurers Refuse to Sell 'Child Only' Policies
American Health and Beauty ^ | September 21, 2010

Many major insurance companies are refusing to write new "Child Only" policies effective Thursday, the day the Obama Health Care plan goes into effect.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Aetna Inc., Cigna Corp., WellPoint Inc., Humana Inc. and UnitedHealth Group Inc.'s Golden Rule subsidiary say they will no longer sell new child-only policies. The new law requires them to accept applications from sick children on insurance policies that they sell, but doesn't require them to sell a policy individually to children in the first place. Insurers said children with pre-existing conditions will be able to apply for coverage on their parents' plans.

The LA Times says these companies will make the move Thursday when parts of the new healthcare law take effect. They cite potentially huge and unexpected costs for insuring children.

Major health insurance companies in California and other states have decided to stop selling policies for tens of thousands of children rather than comply with a new federal healthcare law that bars them from rejecting youngsters with preexisting medical conditions.

ObamaCare is a term referring to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), a federal statute that was signed into law in the United States by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010.

What if they’re not “unintended” though?

In my opinion, the most corrupt, totalitarian, and evil quote in American History.

“What if they’re not “unintended” though?”

They were unintended. They were politically motive child stunts to pretend Obamacare would “help the children” along with the near meaningless “Keep your kids on until 26 years old” weird thing. And were timed to come before the 2010 election.

The insurance companies got pretty much what else they wanted, and that will come afterwards, but the big one, individual mandates to force the purchase of private insurance, will have to wait until 2014.

we all knew some bad things would happen with Obamacare. We knew health care would get worse.I don’t blame the Ins. companies. It is like the gov. telling a grocery store they have to give someone food if they can not pay for it.Socialism does not work and never will.

Great analogy.

Explains the point so well that even the chronically uninformed can understand.

I don’t think they are unintended at all - this makes the insurance companies look exactly like Obama wants them portrayed - evil money hungry - who better to save the day than a government co-op. Same thing will happen when employers decide to take the fine for not offering health insurance rather than offer it at such high costs. Once again the government will save the day with the co-op. Pretty soon we will all be on a government run co-op just like they planned. Wasn’t it Obama that said we can get to single payer right away - we will have to do it incrimentally. Just like this.......

Except we know that and are going to rip the government down first.

It was a dumb plan because the people who came up with it never listened to talk radio or visited websites on the right and didn’t know anyone else who did either.

No, I believe it is but the first step towards getting everyone on the government healthcare dole.

We all pretty much new that every requirement in the ObamaCare bill was structured to drive people out of private insurance and into the waiting arms of the government. Starting with a ridiculously small fine for not providing coverage to raising the stakes with more and more outrageous demands for coverages, all designed to force people out.

What we will end up with are healthcare companies that are more or less a fascist rump of their present selves with a guaranteed puny “profit margin” for contracting with the government to run healthcare.

Of course many doctors and nurses will be gone by then so it won’t really matter.

This is intended. Now insurance companies are out of the child insurance business. Obama will now use that and pick the “one” company that will be owned by the government to issue insurance for kids.

My bet is somehow whatever company gets this they will be funded by Goldman Sacks.

Selling insurance for a child with preexisting conditions is called charity. It's no longer insurance.

My wife became pregnant between jobs. I called for insurance, and the guy laughed at me, and said “I cant insure my car after I bang it up, now can I?”.

So now, any insurance company that sells child only policies is about to go into the charity business. Parents can drop their kids coverage and wait till they get sick to get insurance.

I did not know that and frankly, you are completely wrong.

The Obamacare bill could not be any clearer. It is to criminalize the citizens unless they buy private insurance.

Those lawsuits by the states against individual mandates are against this same thing.

Anyone who tells you Obamacare is “socialist” is completely out of whack.

Sorry. But we'll just have to agree to disagree.

The short term, yes, is to force people to buy private insurance. The reasons why couldn't be more obvious:

1)Because a complete government takeover of the health care/insurance industry in one fell swoop would NEVER be tolerated. So to make it more palatable the Democrats made it look as if they will work with health insurance companies. Temporarily.

2)So many poison pills in the health care legislation is proof that the government fully intends to force people out of their private insurance and onto the government plan. The biggest incentive for this to happen is that companies can pay less for their health care costs by paying a fine rather than for health coverage.

Obama also forces the insurance companies to provide a level of coverage comparible to the Obama option. AND THIS CAN NEVER CHANGE!! The companies CANNOT make changes to existing coverage without risking running afoul of the Obamanation health coverage.

So the long-term plan is to force the health insurance companies to go completely away or neuter them so much that the only way they can make money is to contract back with the government to provide care!

Socialism, or Marxism, is the goal.
