Glenn Beck rally drew a crowd. But how big?
Politico ^ | August 28, 2010 | Scott Wong

How many people jammed the National Mall Saturday to take part in Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally?

Tens of thousands? Certainly. One hundred thousand? Perhaps. Half a million? No one can really say for sure.

Crowds packed the area around the Reflecting Pool, standing shoulder-to-shoulder under the canopy of trees, as they strained to see the pair of big-screen monitors near the Lincoln Memorial. Families huddled around the World War II Memorial fountain, dipping their feet in the water to stay cool under the August sun. And they laid out camping chairs and sun umbrellas, filling the large grassy area between the memorial and the Washington Monument.

Organizers pulled event permits for up to 300,000 people, and expected at least 100,000 to show up.

Beck said he had heard the crowd was between 300,000 and 500,000, "and if that's coming from the media, God only knows."

But the Associated Press said tens of thousands of people participated in the rally.

“Assuming that we can grab either the House or Senate in November there will be a real temptation for Obama to shove a lot of BS through congress during the lame duck session.”

This is the next front in our war. We need to get the RATS that are running as incumbents to PROMISE and COMMIT that they will not pass legislation against the wishes of the American people during the lame duck timeframe - and if they won’t - we need to pound and pound on ‘em.

"Not as much as 9/12 - but a really awesome turnout nonetheless, hey?"

An Awesome Turnout!
Made better by the fact that Bill O'Reilly said if Beck drew over 100,000 he would give up his show. I'm not holding my breath while I wait for that.

Fuzzy pic, but the people appear far from ‘shoulder to shoulder’, so maybe the lowball 10K figure isn’t far off.

Is that image just an example - as I understood that there was a ‘no fly zone’ around the Monument this morning?

And you base the 1.6M on comments made about the crowd and that people were on the other side of the Washington Monument (the far side of this picture)?

Wow, look how many white people are in the crowd. Sharpton and Jackson would have you believe that only blacks cared about MLK.

You can't be serious. I've been to football games where there were far fewer people, and those people numbered at least 50,000. My estimate? At least 100,000 people, of those visible, then another 50-100,000 that are under trees and otherwise out of view.

I thought this was the crowd waiting for a check from the Obama Administration’s “Redistribute the Wealth” Program.

I'm shocked at Paris' arrest. There must be some mistake. She would never sniff cocaine. She's really a misunderstood, good girl.

“Made better by the fact that Bill O’Reilly said if Beck drew over 100,000 he would give up his show. I’m not holding my breath while I wait for that.”

LOL - I’d not heard that...Whatever you wanna say about Beck, BOR would NOT have tried this, nor could he have pulled it off. Beck is a true Conservative populist. I do appreciate Beck’s emphasis on US spiritual and political history and no matter what his critics on the left wanna say about him - they would not have dared tried anything like this on their side - as they would utterly fail!! It’s always the tactic of losers to criticize those who do what they would never dare to do.

Now Beck is not perfect. But this was a successful - terrific rally!

Hey.

When assessing the crowd at race pig Sharpton’s rally, does each person count as two:

One for the actual person, and one for the enormous chips on each and every one of their shoulders.

When I turned on Al’s rally for 2 seconds a while ago, someone was saying that folks are coming in now, that it was 12:20 and everyone was JUST waking up. LOL

That picture of Dr. King was taken early in the morning, as your caption says, and then it mentions that by midday there were half a million. So you can’t compare this shot (early in the morning) with Beck’s full attendance. I’m still saying 300,000 to 600,000 - but some say there were people in the area behind the Monument also, that could have increased that number?

By any account - It was HUGE!

In fact it was HUGH and SERIES!! :)

The only number that really matters in regards to this event is how much money it raised for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.....and it sounds like that was a really nice amount.

You can't be serious.

You see more grass than people...sure I'm serious; there's nothing near the numbers that people here are guessing....at least not in that picture.

This chart is helpful in this regard.

The area from the Lincoln Memorial to the reflecting pool was pretty much packed, confirmed by pictures and my own observation while there. That's about half the area shown in yellow as public access, which the chart shows is capable of holding 946k. That would mean slightly under 500k if the chart is accurate. Plus, there were quite a few people milling around between the reflecting pool and the Washington Monument. I think 500k is a pretty good bet.

Ok then, we simply disagree. Some here say 500k, and I think that number is too high. I stand by my estimate of 1-200k.

Not as much as 9/12

I attended both and based on my observations of the crowd, the condition of the subway getting to and fro, and the comparison of the pictures against the chart I linked above, today was bigger.

I’d have loved to have been there, FRiend! My personal method of ‘on ground’ crowd counting is by how long the line is to have a (legal, not in the bushes) whiz.....unscientific, but I’m a Rose Parade veteran, so know something about head counts.
