This unusual log cabin was photographed decades ago on Winterview Farm near Lexington, Virginia. I have been unable to determine whether it still stands.

Cool.
Duplex.
Jay, always pleased to see your postings... As I noted on your website, a quick “Bing” search reveals a street address for this Winterview Farm as 174 Mt. Atlas Road in Lexington. I then did a Google Earth with that address and there was the small farm. The picture is not real clear when you zoom in, but I believe I see the cabin with cantilevered 2nd story porch near the center of the farm near the end of a gravel road with a stand of trees behind it and a small pond in the background similar to the photo.
Hope you’re doing well.

Big cantilever porch. Are there any cantilever barns nearby?
Thanks — glad to hear the cabin is still there
Glad to see you up and posting, Jay!
Not that I know of. Cantilever barns are rare in Virginia. A field study in the 1980s found only 6 in Virginia, compared to more than 300 in East Tennessee.
...I don’t think it was built as a cabin...a corn crib maybe...later the two windows were added to one side and a second story(loft)put on top...just my guess.
That is very plausible — the chimney appears to be an addition and the tin roof certainly was not original.

yes...and it was electrified at some later date also...Jay, would you please add me to your Mountain Folk and Log Cabins Ping List?...I live in the NC mountains up by the TN/VA line and enjoy the culture very much...thank you.
