Florida church sponsors 'International Burn a Koran Day'
LA Atheism Examiner ^ | July 22, 2010 | Hugh Kramer

Posted on 07/25/2010 10:19:08 PM PDT by citizenredstater9271

The Dove World Outreach Center, a non-denominational church in Gainesville FL, is planning to mark this year's anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks with a little bonfire of Korans, the holy book of Islam. They even have a Facebook page with a mission statement to justify their actions:

"On September 11th, 2010 we will burn the Koran on the property of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, FL in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!"

The church, which also protests against issues such as homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and abortion, has decorated it's front lawn with signs proclaiming "Islam is of the devil!" and it's pastor, Terry Jones, has even authored a book with that title.

According to Jones, the organizers got the idea from another Facebook event, "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" earlier this year.

In an article released by Religion News Service (RNS), Jones said that protests are key to the mission of his church.

"We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn," said Jones, and that the goal these and other protests are to give Muslims an opportunity to convert.

Since the Facebook page went up a week ago, Jones said people have been sending him Korans to burn.

Response from Florida's Islamic community has been relatively muted so far. September 11 this year falls within the Eid al-Fitr holiday when Muslims mark the end of fasting for the holy month of Ramadan. RNS reports that local Muslims are planning to use the feast as an opportunity to share Islamic traditions and Qurans with the church members and the wider community.

“how would we like it if the Muslim countries would have “burn the Bible” days.”

Muslim countries already decapitate and slaughter those who dare to posess Bibles. I think burning korans is childsplay by comparison.

I don’t think any books should ever be burned. I appreciate the sentiment, but don’t like the action... There are other ways to fight them than provocation.

Islam isn't a religion it is a way of life it is the system of government it is their whole social order.
Islam has not be hijacked by radical Islam.

I hate Islam. It is demonic and flat out evil.

But this is America. We don’t burn books here.

I am saddened by the immaturity shown by those who would.

Try studying some apologetics and fight the war with facts, not fire. Sheesh.

Muslims regularly have “cut of the heads of Bible reading school girls day”, so what’s the big deal about burning a book?

Fahrenheit 451

I can’t believe the thread got this far without a mention of this.

As far as moose limbs are concerned, I think we should hunt them down, confiscate everything they own, and unceremoniously dump them all in moose limb countries. We should bar them from entering the United States for any reason ever, forever.

Letting moose limbs into this country is like bringing a rattlesnake into your sleeping bag.

“I can’t believe ANYONE here thinks this is a good idea. It’s childish and counterproductive. It’s just plain stupid.”

I think we should build a pig rendering plant next door to every mosque in the good old USA.

What a bunch of morons.

Nothing like taking a page from the stylebook of the Nazis to win an argument. "Let's burn a book! That'll fix em."

Oh, wait. It won't. It will just demonstrate to the world that this "church" isn't up to the task of confronting the theology of Islam so it's resorting to emotion-driven theatrics. Next time they might resort to flinging poop like orangutans at the zoo or making puppets like liberals do at their most ineffectual demonstrations.

It's the same sort of brain-dead mentality that spurred a nutbag to put a crucifix in a bottle of urine some years back and call it "Piss Christ." How many Christians converted to that guy's point of view?

The Dove World Outreach Center, a non-denominational church in Gainesville FL, is planning to mark this year's anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks with a little bonfire of Korans, the holy book of Islam.

Maybe the grossly misnamed and totally unknown "Dove World Outreach Center" should read the Quran so as to improve their ability to converse about religion with people they presumably wish to convert rather than donning brown shirts and reenacting the runup to WW2.

They even have a Facebook page with a mission statement to justify their actions:

A facebook page is probably all they have. The fake Baptist "church" led by the Al Gore fan whose coven of lawyers is always ready to disrupt the funerals of soldiers with signs such as "God Hates this.." probably has a facebook page, too. That doesn't make them a "church" in anything but their own imaginations.

"On September 11th, 2010 we will burn the Koran on the property of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, FL in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!"

Do these morons realize that some of the victims they are doing this in remembrance of were Muslim? That more muslims die at the hands of radical muslim than anyone else? Apparently not- the church, if it exists, isn't interested in remembrance, it's just interested in doing something outrageous so as to get publicity. That way even MORE people can see how stupid they are.

The church, which also protests against issues such as homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and abortion, has decorated it's front lawn with signs proclaiming "Islam is of the devil!" and it's pastor, Terry Jones, has even authored a book with that title.

Self-ordained Terry Jones, "nondenominationally" looking for denominations in his personal donation basket....

According to Jones, the organizers got the idea from another Facebook event, "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" earlier this year.

Jone's missed the point. The "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" wasn't put out by a church proclaiming itself to be Christian and the intention was to demonstrate islamic intolerance. A church by contrast exists to proclaim Christ's message of salvation, the message that God so loves us that he sent His Son to die for us. Good luck trying to say what you are FOR with a match.

In an article released by Religion News Service (RNS), Jones said that protests are key to the mission of his church. "We feel, as Christians, one of our jobs is to warn," said Jones, and that the goal these and other protests are to give Muslims an opportunity to convert.

What a load of horse manure. For one, how does burning a book of any kind warn anyone of anything? What is the warning? Let's say the local mosque burns some bibles... does the mush-for-brains pastor think that would "give Christians the opportunity to convert" or make them more inclined to take an interest in Islam? Of course not, it would just repel. Then why does he think that burning a Koran is going to persuade a single muslim to hear the Good News?

Since the Facebook page went up a week ago, Jones said people have been sending him Korans to burn.

No matter how much burning goes on, though, the Pastor doesn't look any brighter, and his congregants- if he has any- will only look a little dimmer than the rest of the population. But I guess if you're too ignorant to debate it, you can always burn it. It won't prove anything but it will keep your toes warm.

Sounds like the Muslims have a better "outreach" plan than the church that calls itself an "outreach" center, that prefers dumb stunts to actual preaching, serious outreach or handing out bibles.

Pile up the satanic verses outside and hold a three day exorcism.

You are just wrong. Large portions of the Bible are revered in Islam as Divine Revelation, as Holy Books. Jesus is considered to be one of the prophets of God. You’re severly misinformed if you think that a person will be killed for possessing a Bible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_view_of_the_Bible

This is America, which has religious tolerance as one of its foundations, right? So enough of this “go to Saudi Arabia” talk.

Sure, it takes real bravery, to burn an inanimate object, a book... As I said, there are thousands of productive ideas out there, this is just plain dumb. Hold a Bible class, demand that the US show resolve in fighting Islamic terrorism, protest against the planned Mosque at Ground Zero....

I suggest we tell the muzzies that we are really, really upset & this time we're counting to ten before we get really, really mad!

Hey SmartInsight, stay under your blankie and adjust your panties. Let real men do the job your squishy kind can't seem to get done.

You can't love these people, try to understand them, or help them enough to stop wanting to kill us. Their guide book is the koran & their lord is satan donchano!
