Natural disasters--such as a flood, hurricane, or blizzard--often come without warning. Stocking non-perishable food items ahead of time (and choosing wisely what you include) will help you weather the storm with less stress.

Fueling your body during an emergency is very different from your everyday diet. Because youll probably expend more energy than you normally would, you should eat high-energy, high-protein foods. And because you have a limited supply, the higher-quality foods you eat--and the less of them--the better. In a disaster or an emergency you want those calories, says Barry Swanson, a food scientist at Washington State University . You want some nutrients and some fibersomething to keep your diet normal.

True. I do try to keep canned goods on hand, and pasta is so easy.

Agreed. Even crackers last for about a year. There’s also canned tuna, soup, hash, beets..it’s just almost endless.

Fritos are great for fire-starting materials. No joke. My son’s Boy Scout troop uses them.

"That's right all you need is a GUN with lots of bullets and the list of all your friends that stock up a years worth of food" Do you think people who are smarter than you (demonstrated by your plan versus their theirs) won't kill you if you try to steal their property?

That’s good. We have such severe weather here at times. I keep soda bottles that I have filled with tap water in the garage, as well as lots of paper products and canned goods. I also have a good supply of batteries.

"Our plan would be to simply drive out of the affected area. If we did not have a relative we could go stay with we would simply find a motel away from the emergency" If you can drive away and go to a motel you are not in an emergency situation of the degree being discussed, IMO.

Too bad so sad for me. I will just have to choke it down all at once. YUMMY!!! :)
Oh lord!!! Living in Panama, I did not know those wonderful freeze dried foods existed!!!
I wonder if I can order them through the mail? I wonder if customs will allow them to arrive to my mailbox. Time for some homework.
Please take care.
Thank you.
YUMMY!!!!

Check out your local Walmart. They have 3 and 5 gallon water jugs for Hot and Cold dispensers. I recommend the 3 gallon containers because not everyone in my family can lug them around. A very affordable way of meeting your water needs.

We lose power here so often. Batteries are essential, and because we have a well, once power is off everything dies. It’s difficult, and must be planned for.
