Critical Thinking Without Knowledge
Maureen Tabor, June 25, 2010
I had a student last year who wrote me his life story. When he was a little boy, he knew he could do anything. His parents loved him, he loved life, and when he grew up he knew he wanted to be a CEO. Then he got to the University. There he learned that he could not be a CEO because he was a minority. He learned that the whole world would be against him, that he was a victim, and that he had to devote his life to helping others.
His paper was well written, and it was sad; beautifully he wrote those discouraging words. I noted in the margin: Is this what you want to teach your sonsthat they are victims? I pointed out that the best way he could help people was to become that CEO and hire lots of people. At the end of the quarter when the class sat council in a circle to express what they had learned and what they liked and disliked, the talking stick came to him. He took it. He said that my marginal notes on that paper really made him think. He realized he did not want to pass along to his children the lesson of victimhood, helplessness, and anger...

What has happened to higher education in America?
“Then he went to university. There he learnt he couldn’t be a CEO because he is a “minority”.
And it’s not just about the universities. I’ve often come across working class parents who tell their kids not to get any ideas “above their station”. They snuff out any ambition in their kids, and then they blame “the system”.
I saw a teacher post on Armstrong Williams Facebook page. She actually teached her kids that black people have a really hard time getting anywhere because the white man keeps them done. Nothing like crushing ambitions and handing out ready-made excuses.
Not enough caffiene yet this morning - that should be “Williams’” and “teaches.” My editor wife should be looking over my shoulder when I post.

the talking stick? WTH kind of class was this?
It appears that Ms. Tabor has taught sociology in colleges in California. I suspect a high level of goofballery is standard in this type of “education” environment.
"done" not "down".
Proof that it is the white man -- the one running the various Departments of Education -- keeping black people down.
QED.
Incidentally, how does she explain
a) Teh One's election to TOTUS
b) his subsequent epic
Cheers!
I think I caught whatever she was dishing out when she posted. My most poorly written post ever.
