My Solution on How to Stop the Gulf Oil Spill by Steve Cooper, The Conservative Monster.com

This idea is very simple.....

1. Get a massive commercial construction dumpster

2. Turn it upside down, cut a hole in the center and attach a massive pipe

3. Lower it over the oil leak

4. A boat is at the surface waiting to capture the oil

As a mechanical engineer, it does seem at first blush that it should be jsut that simple.

Bur of course that was essentially their first attempt.

I haven’t followed it much, but I guess that failed due to ice crystals (methane expanind out of it’s liquid phase).

My though was “Big deal. Pump some steam down there”.

I have no idea why this wouldn’t work. But I’m sure someone does.

How can I forward this idea to the Nobel prize winners in the WH?

Didn’t they already try that with the “funnel” thingy?

Reports say there are several holes leaking/gushing oil so you’d need several dumpsters and something to hold them to the ever cracking and collapsing sea floor.

They tried that, it failed.

and this will work better than a purpose built, 94 ton, 4 story containment dome (and its smaller sibling) because..?

The prior failure with the custom concrete containment vessel would have done the same thing but, as you mentioned, the containment vessel quickly clogged with methane hydrate crystals.

Funny how the containment vessel will ‘clog’ with methane hydrate crystals, but the well itself won’t.

Exactly. Wrap some copper tubing around the massive METAL pipe and pump a hot fluid through the copper tubing. Or maybe just some waterproof heaters on the inside of the upside-down dumpster.

Okay. Some questions:

1.) What is the amount of flow that is emerging from the hole right now? What diameter would the pipe have to be?
2.) How would you prevent the same issues of ice formation at this depth that rendered Top Hat unworkable?
3.) What is the number of crude tankers that would be needed on a daily basis to capture and transport the flow?
4.) Are there enough tankers not already under contract that are available for this purpose? Tankers are normally busy transporting oil for immediate usage. What is the economic impact of removing the needed tankers from the system as it stands?

This suggestion seems to be the equivalent of saying “Just use a plane to fly to the moon!”

I think that’s basically what they’re trying to do. They claim they’ve captured 90%of the leak that way using a hood of some kind and funnelling it to boats above.

This whole thing makes no sense to me.

You’ve had oil leaks in Saudi Arabia 100 times as bad and skimmers are able to retrieve the oil from the surface.

The technology is there.

So why is this @ hole president not stopping the leak?

I think you’re right. The PSI is 70,000?!!!!!! If so there is nothing on this planet that can cap that. It will spew for months.

Depth under water is the issue. The maximum depth in the Persian Gulf is 300 ft and the average is 160 ft. If you have a leak it will surface very close to the rig and you can contain it instead of traveling miles underwater like the current leak. You can also send crews down to work on the rig. Even 300 ft is within SCUBA depth.

You don’t think a flotilla of skimmers off shore would have prevented the oil from reaching shore?

If so, then it’s a matter of time before the oil saturates every inch of beach and secondly, there is NOTHING they can do.

All these little people out there with their shrimp boats and booms are wasting their time.

I think it’s seems clear. BP jumped at the chance to close out this thing for 20 billion where by the close out the right for future claims.

I think too, that Obama and company KNOW that this is worse that what’s been told and they’re diverting the attention to other things.

According to stories printed yesterday, they’re looking at pressures of 100,000 psi. The best valves that they have will only handle 1000 psi. The pipe is eroding from the sand being blown up with the oil and methane gas. It’s weakened to the point where if they were to cap it, the pipe couldn’t hold the pressure.

Huh? The best valves who has? I've seen water blasters (with valves) that handle 35,000 psi.

My solution: Stuff the spewing cracks and holes with so many White House and CONgress beaureaucrats that it chokes the system completely down until it stops working altogether, much like everything else they touch. - OB1
