Why not?
The arguments presented in favor of the law that now bans smoking in all bars and restaurants in Va. was that smoking poses a serious health danger to the public.
Separate designated non-smoking areas wasn't sufficient the proponents argued, because second-hand smoke also poses a danger.
As it stands now, the only bars or restaurants in Va. that can legally accommodate patrons who wish to smoke are those that have totally closed-off, separate areas, with there own ventilation system. Or, if they are private and not open to the general public.
Can the case be made that the consumption of alcoholic beverages also poses a serious health danger to the public? That's a no-brainer.
For those who supported the anti-smoking ban in Va, or currently support such legislation in other states citing a "serious health danger" to the public, if you would not also support a ban on consumption of alcoholic beverages in bars and restaurants as a "serious health danger" to the public, there is only one word for that--hypocrisy.

That “not open to the public” thing sounds like the perfect loophole. Charge $1 for one-day membership to The Club. New members automatically get $1 off of their first order.

Nicotine addicts seem to forget that a person smoking cigarettes also causes the person next to them to inhale carcinogenic smoke.
If a person drinks alcohol, the person sitting next to them is not ingesting said alcohol.
Bring back Speakeasies?
That’s actually what private club laws usually are.
In our city most bars are private clubs because doing so allows them to get around the state law that says that bars have to close at 2am on Sundays. We’re one of only a few cities where bars stay open until the last patron leaves and that’s cause the overwhelming majority are these little clubs where you fill out a little piece of paper that they shred the next day to get in.
Cars are much worse.
Smoking has been a pretty easy mark. Most people who don’t smoke have been oblivious to implications and precedent of the strident anti-smoking movement. Now we have to wait and see what is targeted next.

They can measure your BAC by a breath test, because when you've been drinking there's alcohol on your breath. If you're breating in out, the person next to you is breating it in, just like the tobacco smoke. Alcohol doesn't have to be ingested, it'll go directly into your bloodstream through your nose, lungs, or any mucous membrane.
Apply the same "if a whole bunch is bad, then any is too much" formulat to that.
People relieving their bowels of excess gas usually forget they are making the person across the room breathe in carcinogenic gas.

A man's rights end where another’s begins. I think had more smokers been mindful of this basic rule the backlash would never have forced the governments hand.

Smoking is a choice, one that forces non-smokers to make choices. When you force someone else to make a new choice you have affected them enough to hold a grudge. People do not like having to change their plans based on what they perceive as unhealthful and selfish habits of others. They are far more tolerant of things that we all must endure.
I’ve never received a “contact-high” from alcohol but I’m pretty sure I felt something at a ZZ Top concert.
Uh wrong...People that drink alcohol develop rhinoceros breath, and I can smell their disgusting alcohol laced breath 5 feet away.
Ban alcohol consumption in public!
Well, they say alcohol impairs your judgement, so ya kinda have to wonder how you're supposed to know when your drunk.
You bring up an excellent point about “a man’s rights ending where another’s begins”. Would that not also apply to the bar/restaurant owner deciding what clientele he would like to serve?
