Surprising to many, the Exxon Valdez spill is only the 34th largest oil spill ever. And while the Deep Water Horizon spill is a disaster by any means, it remains distant to this top 10 list (Hopefully it never makes this list). I decided to publish this list because Ive heard a handful of people say its the end-of-the-Ocean/Gulf-as-we-know-it. While it will take time to cleanup the surrounding shores from this environmental disaster, there is no doubt the Ocean and Gulf of Mexico will continue.

But those facts don’t fit the doomsday story that favors the environmentalists agenda. Hence it can’t be true.
And what about other countries??

I cannot believe they are this stupid, but Bam is about to get a lesson in real life. BP is no angel, their PR efforts are very lame, and the leak is their fault. To think that the Feds can fix this any faster is absurd.

Christ...I have a feeling that this is going to get much, much worse before it gets any better :(
“Ive heard a handful of people say its the end-of-the-Ocean/Gulf-as-we-know-it”
To the people HERE ON FR who suggested nuking it/biblical references to the sea becoming blood, I have one suggestion....
chuck. the. tv. out.
I’m sure this should cheer up Louisiana’s fishing industry.
Just wondering...if BP files for bankruptcy, who pays for the cleanup???
Well you know that 9/11 doesn’t rank when compared to all other aerial bombings of population centers. So since it isn’t on of the worst ever I guess we all over reacted right?
Obama going to talk it shut!? The effing guy is an idiot.
How is he an idiot!? Taking the responsibility away from the perps, and making us responsible for the disaster instead.
Ain’t that grand.
Your logic is straight out of the liberal playbook.
Yes, it's an environmental disaster. The article quite rightly points out that we've seen a multitude of larger spills that somehow the planet survived, many of which the breathless mainstream media didn't even bother to report on.
Nor did the rest of the world surrender to the environmental wackos that seek to ban all forms of energy production.
There is no agreement yet on how much oil is coming from this well, so that alone makes this list speculation at best.
So both the doomsdayers and the “no big dealers” are both FOS at this point.
You can be sure Bad People are meeting about this as we speak.
Btw- 1 barrel/sec.
Well, that explains why Obama hasn’t been that worried about it ... :-)
The article does not specify the amount of oil that has been spill by the BP rig so far. How much oil has been spilled?
But those ten oil spills happened at the surface (tanker accidents, Kuwait release, top of rig) or in relatively shallow off-shore rigs. The oil was at or near the water surface, making it easier to evaporate and/or collect.
One of the differences in this case is that the oil is being released a mile down, and apparently much or most of it is not getting to the surface -- it's in those gigantic underwater plumes.
If this keeps up for a bunch more weeks (which seems quite possible), we stand to learn a lot about the longer-term underwater effects. And it won't be good.
Depends on whose numbers you believe about the rate it's coming out at... but probably in the range of 20-30 million gallons (compared to around 11 million gallons for the Exxon Valdez spill).
Divide by 42 gal/barrel for barrels: 500K-700K barrels.
Early rate estimates were lower, and some hysterical estimates are much higher, but the above is probably a reasonable guess.
60 sec/min, 60 min/hr, 24 hr/day -- that's 86,400 barrels/day. That's pretty high, considering the most productive wells around only produce 40,000/day (or so I have read).
If it's really doing a barrel/sec, it's a freakin' gusher.
