VIDEO: ENVIROMENTALIST RECOMMENDS DITCHING SHAMPOO FOR HOMEMADE VERSION!
Economic Vindicator! ^ | 5-14-10 | James

She says: "Conventional shampoo and conditioner are like heroin for your hair. Shampoo and conditioner are something you've never questioned the existence of. But did you know they weren't used until the 20th Century? These packaged products are often expensive and contain toxins that are dangerous to our health. You can be well coifed and conscientious. Umbra shows you how make DIY shampoo and conditioner with baking soda, apple cider vinegar and water. Save money, save the planet, save yourself. No Poo Shampoo and Conditioner!"

She's so tricksy!

Are ground up environmentalists good for use around oil spills? It would seem like if you ground them fine, mixed with sand, sawdust and spread them on the beach it might do some good. We should give it a try.

Because they sure aren’t good for anything else.

I agree with her, although because I want to save my wallet rather than "the planet".

It just is not neccesary for most people to use shampoos every day, and virtually no one needs hair conditioner. It is a con to keep Vidal Sasson in luxury.

"Shampoo and conditioner are something you've never questioned the existence of. But did you know they weren't used until the 20th Century?"

Yes, I know that. I also know people stunk back then, & had serious head lice problems. The term nitpicking comes from the task of removing head lice from people & their wigs. One reason both men & women wore wigs was because their natural hair was a stinking rat's nest. Hey, nitpicking could be a new, GREEN jobs program.

Beyond that, Baking soda & vinegar will react together, creating an expanding, foamy CO2 mess. As a kid, I made a homemade fire extinguisher* with baking soda & vinegar. Whether this will safely clean hair I do not know, but it will put out a fire. Since it DOES create CO2, I am surprised environmentalists would recommend this. Wash your hair in the river would seem to be the best green solution.

*Ask your mom for a tall jar with a lid, a straw, a paper napkin, a rubber band, some vinegar, & baking soda. Ask your dad to drill or poke a hole in the jar lid slightly smaller than the straw diameter**. Poke the straw thru the hole, about 1 inch. Pour a small pile of baking soda in the center of the napkin, wrap it up like a small bag, & tear off the excess napkin. Wrap the mouth of this bag around the inch of straw under the lid. secure the bag to the straw with the rubber band. Now pour vinegar into the jar, but not so deep that the baking soda bag will touch the vinegar. Screw the top on the jar. When you shake the jar, OUTSIDE IN THE YARD, the resulting stream of CO2 foam from the straw will put out a fire. DO NOT POINT YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHER AT PEOPLE OR PETS UNLESS THEY ARE ON FIRE!

**If you do not understand this word, ask your dad to explain it.

lol — true. And is it supposed to fizz your hair clean? I don’t see baking soda and vinegar having much cleaning action, especially after they’ve neutralized one another.
