Where Krauthammer Goes Wrong on Illegal Aliens
Conservative Examiner ^ | 5/5/2010 | Anthony G. Martin

Posted on 05/05/2010 1:31:39 PM PDT by Welshman007

Introducing a proposal that would purport to solve America's growing immigration problem, columnist and political pundit Charles Krauthammer stated on Bill O'Reilly's Fox News program last night that amnesty for illegal aliens is acceptable, but only after the borders are sufficiently secured.

Before considering where Krauthammer goes wrong it is important to affirm where he is right.

America's immigration program is in complete disarray. Nearly 100 years ago the U.S. established reasonable limits on the number of immigrants accepted into citizenship, based upon the ability of the country to successfully accommodate and assimilate newcomers into the culture.

For a number of years that plan worked.

Then, beginning in the late 1960s under LBJ and a Congress heavily dominated by liberal Democrats, the nation threw to the wind those reasonable limits. While the restrictions remain on the books, they were ignored, allowing millions of illegal aliens to cross the border without any attempt to address the lawlessness.

Thus, periodically, rather than addressing the problem of those who break the law by attempting to get in front of the line of those who wish to immigrate legally, Congress would simply grant blanket amnesty, thus rewarding and enabling illegal behavior.

There is no need to. Acceptance of destruction of the rule of law is suicidal. You’ll just have to mow your own lawn or actually pay someone what it’s worth.

Conservative principles are quite straight-forward. Most people know them.

Ditto Puerto Rican Statehood. Why are 50+ pubbies in support of bringing a Third World nation of 4 million into the union?

“Krauthammer made me so mad last night....

He forgot to mention how unfair to the AMERICAN people all of this is...”

Charles Krauthammer has expressed the how unfair this is many times. Most of us who read his columns or listen to him understand this. Where have you been?

“Some think it means ‘instant citizenship’....some think it means no fines or punishment for being here illegally.”

Exactly....and such thinking often takes place sans factual information.

Personally, I find Krauthammer to be an astute analyst.

Do you think the minority of the Supreme Court had the better argument on Heller? Krauthammer does.

Maybe you should look inward? Just saying.....

And maybe you, dcp, should mention that you have described yourself as hopelessly liberal on illegals and have profited from them...in the interest of full disclosure of course.

Let’s also solve the problem of LEGAL immigration.

I'd support legal immigration at levels 5 times our current levels if it was specifically targeted to benefit the US. I have a MUCH stronger kinship with a hard-working, freedom-loving Korean than I have with a lazy, good-for-nothing American.

Krauthammer is not your typical “conservative.” He is a solid conservative on foreign policy and economic issues, but on social issues, his views are unorthodox. For instance, he is a staunch anti-Second Amendment man.

Say,you must have taken some of the same math classes Obama did since you see the matter as he does.

Say, you must have been dropped on your head as a child, as you appear to have no access to rational thought -- not to mention the fact you clearly can't insult your way out of a paper bag.

Here's your question, genius: How long will it take for you to provide the necessary due process to 12 million illegals? How much will that cost, and where will you find the police, judges, and time to deal with them all as due process requires?

I doubt that you're really an idiot -- but you're certainly making a good show of it.

Oh, really? And if that's the case, our current political situation suggests they must not give two hoots for them.

The fact is, though, that conservatism is in utter disarray. We have no coherent political message.

Why are you hung up on due process? Did the Christmas bomber deserve to be mirandized? Fact is the illegals have been stealing all along. Education, hospital and not to mention plenty in prison all bear costs to society. This is not even mentioning the fact they are hear illegally.
There’s already a system in place to deal with illegals. Expanding it will not cost anywhere near what they steal. This does not have to be done overnight. I don’t care if it takes a decade. Once they start getting shipped back plenty will head back on their own.

When I say “most” I refer to conservatives.

Conservatism is not in utter disarray. The Republican party needs some good organization and an excellent PR push though.

We can't deport them. Any "comprehensive immigration" bill should include a couple of sensible principles.
1. Any person who is in this country illegally will never be eligible for citizenship, under any circumstances.
2. Social services and assistance programs are available to only American citizens.
3. Voting rights will never be extended to any non-citizen.
4. Employers in America must obtain citizenship documents or lawful visa documents from every employee.
5. Social Security Administration must contact the employer if a submitted SS number is already being used by another employer.
6. Every ineligible employee will be arrested and imprisoned until deported.
7. Employers who fail to notify ICE of ineligible employees will be fined $50,000 per incident.

To the radical left, the immigration fight is about nothing else but additional voters. Among all provisions, those now here illegally should never receive that right.

I think deportation should mainly be used when LEOs already have the people, i.e., they’ve been arrested for something. There’s no need for a grand plan to hunt down / round up illegal immigrants. The real key to reducing the illegal population is to make it so difficult and unpleasant for them to live here that they will choose to leave.

Oh, gee, I don't know. A smart guy like you might actually guess why. Hint: it's in most copies of the Constitution -- I don't know about yours.

Let's not be too harsh on the Cabbage-Smasher (Ger: Kraut- Hammer).

After all, St. Rush of Holy Limbaugh told us for years that "illegal immigration was the sign of a healthy economy and nothing to worry about!" This of course, was the mantra of the US Chamber of Commerce.

Members of the VRWC, me included, have to always remember that our favorite yakkers are about selling ad time, market segmentation, and entertainment. The GOP is in the ridiculous position of having media people as its chief public exponents. Our elected Republicans have to do more of the heavy lifting to get back their self-respecty.
