Andrew Breitbart appeared at an awards ceremony in Chicago on Friday the 16th and one of his remarks was that Hollywood is "40 years into the left injecting bad into America." To counter the bad, Breitbart urged us all to remind each other what is good in our great nation. As an illustration of Breitbart's warning I give you Paul Verhoeven, the director of the 1987 film Robocop.
Verhoeven recently spoke to MTVs Josh Horowitz about the underlying symbolism of Robocop and his main conception was that the Robocop character was an "American Jesus" because his method of righting wrongs was to shoot and kill all evil doers. Robocop was judge, jury and executioner all in one and that apparently makes him an "American Jesus."
It was Verhoeven's contention that America is little else but a violent nation that has no interest in peace, law, and order, or diplomacy but is the quintessentially violent cowboy, self-interested, and mostly a lawless place.
In his own words, Verhoeven told MTV the following...

I am more offended for Jesus here than for America!
Is he honestly saying that Jesus would go around killing people? >:-(
Never mind his premise that America is “violent”. Idiots such as he have no conception of “violence”.
You look at Europe, Russia/Soviet Union, China, and other Leftist and/or Muslim countries during the past 20th century and see the body counts they racked up and compare that to USA. If you pointed that out to Verhoeven he would get quite angry.
Indeed, only Americans are bloodthirsty, violent people.
Bump!
I’ll buy that for a dollar.....
I was just watching Leviathan (about undersea mutations) and SCREAMERS with Peter Weller on YOUTUBE. Far better actor than the current crop of metrosexuals like Damon and Clooney.
LOL brilliant!
“Which makes Clarence Boddicker the American Antichrist.”
Paul Verhoeven is one sick puppy. His movies are filled with gratuitous, misanthropic gore. He ruined “Total Recall” by taking a funny, imaginative sci-fi movie and turning it into a grotesque splatter-fest.
That said, I still have to give him props for having the imagination to cast Kurtwood Smith as the villain, Clarence Boddicker. Skinny? Balding? Bespectacled? Truly the opposite of what one would expect of a savage movie gangster. Smith had the acting chops to make Clarence truly scary.
Peter Weller makes a pretty good ancient history adjunct professor, too. I definitely like his “Engineering an Empire” series on the History Channel. His class lectures must be a blast.
