The Zachariah Johnston House, also known as (of course) The Stone House, is located near Lexington in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Built in 1797 by John Spear for Zachariah Johnston, the house is made of irregularly-sized quarried limestone blocks. The date of construction and the names of the builder and owner are etched into a chimney stone.

Wow, beautiful ... and a heck of a lot of work, too!
I work at a house that was built in the late 1800’s and they have a working fireplace that is the same size. The gentleman who owns the home puts one of those large logs on to burn and it lasts a good part of the morning/afternoon. It’s a chore getting a piece of wood that size into the fireplace, though.
