The tea party has erupted on the political scene with much fanfare and much criticism. All due to the sheer number of people involved no one can ignore them anymore every town in America has a tea party, and if you have not attended one by now, the odds are someone you know has (and you like that person). The vast majority of tea party patriots are every day citizens, from all walks of life, all political persuasions who are anxious to get involved and make a difference in public policy. They feel their elected officials have failed them, they want their voices heard, and they want their liberties protected.
Critics see the tea party through thorn colored glasses. They actually like big government policies and high taxes which is the complete opposite of what the tea party hopes for. So critics attack the messenger instead of the message, piece together anything that might be perceived as negative, string all the perceptions together, and BAM, the New York Times has a story.
Tea party patriots are true to their form, they are not called grass-roots for nothing momentum grows from the bottom up. Different from a political party the movement is not so concerned about media opinion or saving face, what they are trying to do, is be heard by a government that is not listening, and in that sense, they are proving to be effective by their visibility and noise.
Its not an easy task keeping thousands of loosely organized groups cohesive and on topic, yet with the tea party it happens naturally. They do not have a Chairman, Committee or a national spokesman to guide them, but they manage to grab attention anyway by staying focused with a simple message.
