VANITY: I HATE FREE Roaming CATS
SandRat

Posted on 04/10/2010 3:50:39 PM PDT by SandRat

I've used commercial cat repellent, cayenne pepper, and now just put out an electronic device that's supposed to detect motion and emit an ultrasonic sound to repel them.

I'm furious, I spend 2 wasted hours every Saturday to just clean up the cat scat in my front yard.

Any suggestions out in Freeperland for chasing away the cats without hurting them that I haven't already thought of.

I have seen the half full plastic milk cartons around the perimeter of the yard before. Someone told me it was to keep dogs out but hey if it works on cats. Never tried the zz top cd’s. HAH!

Once a cat is in your yard, one strategy is is to set about sowing some doubt in the cat’s mind. An old gamekeepers trick is to create some flickering random light reflections as a deterrent. For example you could place some plastic bottles half filled with water in your borders.

Perhaps even more effective (but maybe a bit unsightly) is to string some unwanted CD’s together with knots in between to keep them apart. These high tech cat distracters can then be hung across flower beds and vegetable plots or hung from trees. (My research shows that cats are most likely to be repelled by old ZZ Top CD ‘s...).

Just recently a garden plant has been developed called Coleus Canina that cats, dogs and even foxes will avoid.

You could also try using the herb rue. The blue leaves are a lovely garden accent, but cats seem to hate the odor.

Cats are not keen on the smell of citrus either. So you could try using orange or lemon peel in your yard as a deterrent. Similarly some folks advocate coffee grounds, blood meal, cayenne pepper, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil.

Maybe you don’t mind cats in your garden, but you need to protect certain spots such as bird feeders. One thing you can do is place clippings from thorny or spiky plants under bird feeders and that will prevent cats from using these areas to stalk birds. Another idea is to fix a downward opening cone or a biscuit tin to the pole below the bird table to prevent a cat from climbing up it. Vaseline or other similar grease applied pole of the bird table will also help (assuming the pole is smooth).

I agree, the cage works nice but my bet it could be fun to sit outside with a water-soaker gun and zap the cats if they’re that bad and abundant.

A weekend or two of that, I bet those cats would stop coming to visit and it might accidentally turn out to be harmless fun!

Make a party of it...

The Contech Scarecrow

When the Scarecrow sees an intruder, it instantly sprays the trespasser with water under full garden hose pressure. The effect is both startling and immediate! Animals quickly get out of the area and avoid it in the future.

The Scarecrow will protect an area approximately 35 feet wide and 45 feet deep, which makes it an excellent device for keeping cats off lawns, and away from ponds and gardens. It operates off a 9V battery which might typically last up to 6 months if operated day and night (or 3000+ activations). The device needs to be connected to a good quality consumer water hose with a water pressure of around 30 to 80 P.S.I.

Call your local health Dept. If your neighbor has that many cats and they are coming into your yard, then maybe it can become a health hazard, especially if they are making that much of a mess that it takes you 2 hrs. to clean it up. I know our health dept. works with DFACS, and police dept. to condemn little old ladies homes who like to keep hundreds of cats in their homes.

ok - listen up - I had the same problem - by several small traditional mouse traps - the small ones......bait with cat food - they wont be back -

my neighbors cats was pissing under my front windows....could have them open....I placed the traps out probably 3 x ....on the third time the trap was snapped before I made it back into the house - never saw the cat or the trap again

I had another neighbor whos big dogs would crap regularly in my yard at 4am.....I tried paintball, phone calls - nothing worked.....about the same time I cooked a prime rib dinner for church and saved the fat......I brought it home and studded it with dulcolax...placed it out side and the two dogs ate the whole thing......I could only imaging how they painted that white rug......

The dogs were never an issue again-

In today’s “Hints by Heloise” I read that cats hate lava rocks and won’t dig where they are placed.

A BB gun is how I use to keep rabbits from using my flower gardens as a salad bar....didn’t kill them, just sting enough to make them leave, then it seem like word got around and I rarely see them anymore....

First thing is find their base of operations. Once located, gather intel of thier habits. Then, in the middle of the night, hit them with three low yield tactical nukes. Then follow thru with a Improved Napalm strike by Skyraiders.
Thats how Curtis LeMay would handle it.

Me too....I am shocked to hear how people in here are so cruel and think nothing about drowning, shooting or harming them. A good person would take care of any situation without harming. These people who care more about their stupid lawns than the life of an animal like a cat are sociopaths and heartless. There are TONS of monsters in here....I hope they get their justice. I know that if I run into one of them in a dark alley, God won’t hold it against me to help with that justice.

Crossman pump bb gun

People say you can’t train a cat, but by the second third good sting, they learn to stay away

Cats bury their poo, so you need to be on the lookout for another type of animal pooing in your yard.

Not true. Our 6 foot fenced back yard has unburied feces on the lawn. Don't know of any dog that would or could have done it.
