A Liberal Guide to Debating Conservatives
The Persistent Conservative ^ | Scot Cerullo | Mar 31, 2010

Liberals have long since learned that debating Conservatives can be a challenging endeavor, since Conservatives have a penchant for fortifying their arguments with facts, statistics, history and other elements that create convincing and thoughtful argumentsNot to worry. The following are several tips Liberals can use right away to begin defeating Conservatives in every debate, every time.

Lib Tip # 1: Drop the Race Card: The moment your Conservative opponent begins crafting a cogent, air-tight argument buttressed in fact, drop the race card. This technique is designed to stifle further discussion, impugns your opponent and puts him on the defensive. Often, this is enough of a distraction to direct attention away from your lack of qualitative, quantitative evidence.

Lib Tip # 2: Impugn the Source: When debating a Conservative, content is less important than character. When your Conservative opponent states a compelling argument, do not address the argument and instead attack the Conservative personally. Since we are all sinners, it shouldn’t take long to find something wrong with your opponent. Use it.

Lib Tip # 3: Social Justice Trumps Logic: Argue every issue from a “Social Justice” or “Moral” high-ground. The Conservative will attempt to show that your ideas are unworkable, unsustainable or downright illogical. Don’t worry about any of that. Just stay on message by arguing from the moral, social justice perspective.

Lib Tip # 4: Exploit the Weakest Link: Define your opponent by his weakest link. If 10,000 Tea Partiers hold a rally, and one guy has a placard that is inappropriate, that is all you need to characterize the entire group as radical, racist militants. See how that works? It’s simple and fun and, most importantly, deflects all those awkward facts and articulate points away from the discussion and leaves the Conservative in a defensive mode.

Nicely written. I’d like to see him write a counter response for Conservatives.

Liberal arguments are almost always emotion based and not fact based.

great piece. I see most of those on almost a daily basis...but missed using a straw man argument...I see that just about the most frequently.

For example, recently I was debating some libs over a threatened local union strike (garbage collectors). The package they are being offered is said to be $110,000 per worker, but the union isn't happy with that. So the line of argument I've seen is that if you're against the union workers making more then you must be against hard working people earning a decent living and you must be a terrible, evil person in the pocket of big business.

Now I have no idea how you can start collecting those pay checks from big business to point out on a message board how economics works but I'd like to start collecting the dough.

Lib Tip # 1: Drop the Race Card:

Point out that Libs are almost always white and rich. Only then do you point out that their policies have condemned minorities to welfare state dependency.

Lib Tip # 2: Impugn the Source:

Deem the leftist a "Name-calling loudmouth. Can't make an argument so they fall to this..." Lib Tip # 3: Social Justice Trumps Logic:

"Social Justice" means they're in charge; they want to be king, with your money.

Lib Tip # 4: Exploit the Weakest Link:

Like this?

I no longer debate liberals, I tell them to take their lies and get out of my face.

Lib Tip # 9: Government is Good:

The logic of the welfare state mentality is capable all by itself of resulting on unlimited inflation. If it is believed that the government is a real-life Santa Claus, indeed, a benevolent deity, and that its inflation-financed deficits are the source of free benefits, then there is no logical stopping point to the size of the deficit, and the amount of the inflation used to finance them-given the fact that the government has the power to inflate.

I love when then drop the race card on me. I'm a white America loving, conservative “Hispanic”; and I just let them go off on their stupidity. When I see it proper, then I tell them that according to leftists, I cannot be racist. Their eyes will light up like a light house, and they become dumb for a few seconds. I love it!!!!

You forgot an extra point: outnumber them. When you have on one conservative have 5 liberals attacking them when on camera.

I’d like to see him write a counter response for Conservatives.

I'll give it a shot and others can add to it.

Lib Tip # 1: Drop the Race Card: The moment your Conservative opponent begins crafting a cogent, air-tight argument buttressed in fact, drop the race card.

Don't get defensive! Simply say, "So what? I am not a racist but if I were what would that have to do with this?"

Lib Tip # 2: Impugn the Source: When debating a Conservative, content is less important than character.

Once again, "So what? What does my character have to do with this? Do you prefer the character of murderers like Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, etc? They were all 'Progressives'."

Lib Tip # 3: Social Justice Trumps Logic: Argue every issue from a “Social Justice” or “Moral” high-ground.

Ask, "Are you interested in justice or fairness? All I hear from the Left is 'Fairness' or 'it's not Fair'. Remember, Justice is much harsher than Fairness so make sure you know what you want. Who decides the Fairness of an issue?"

Lib Tip # 4: Exploit the Weakest Link: Define your opponent by his weakest link. If 10,000 Tea Partyers hold a rally, and one guy has a placard that is inappropriate, that is all you need to characterize the entire group as radical, racist militants.

Ridicule that argument by saying, "That is another of Saul Allinsky's silly rules for radicals. It is called agitprop, a term originated in the USSR. It is a Russian combination of agitate and propaganda. It consists of planting the Left's own operatives in a group to misbehave and discredit the group. The Left does it all the time. Don't tell me you fell for that?"

Lib Tip # 5: Use “New Speak”: If health care is not a right according to the Constitution, and you want it to be a right, claim it is and then raise your voice. Raising your voice is always the best course of action in lieu of a good argument.

Purposely and noticeably lower your voice and extend the argument by asking, "What about food and drink, clothing, a car, a TV, movie tickets, and even happiness? Aren't those rights, too? I would certainly think they are equal to health care. I would prefer to be happy and puny than hale and unhappy, wouldn't you? Isn't happiness a right?"

Lib Tip # 6: State the Opposite of what you believe:

Similar to New Speak and the Justice versus Fairness argument. When they start that BS just say, "So what?" and that will quickly get back to the Justice Fairness deal and the who is to decide answer.

Lib Tip # 7: Define America by it’s Errors, not its Successes:

A few facts, in the form of questions, may be necessary here. Slavery: "Were we the only country with slaves or was the practice worldwide? Who started the movement to eliminate it? Are there still countries with an active slave trade 150 years after we ended it?" Imperialism: "Which countries have we invaded, occupied, and exploited? How about the Progressives like Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and the Japanese militants of the 1930s and 40s before we defeated them and returned self-rule to the people?

Lib Tip # 8: Blame talk radio and FOX news for fanning hate and racism:

"Talk radio and cable news represent the most accurate indication of what America is thinking. They are far better than any polls that are taken. They represent the the American people who turn to them by choice. If you think America is racist and hate filled then I guess you are right about talk radio and Fox News. I don't think they are and neither do most Americans.

Lib Tip # 9: Government is Good:

"Who makes up the government? The American people, except for a stray ineligible Progressive President every now and then. Ergo, how can the American people be hate filled and racist and the government which consists of them be good? If they are hateful and racist then so is the government. Conversely, if the American people are good they will do most of the things for themselves that you want the government to do for them. Stop being stupid!"

Lib Tip # 10: Assign Blame away from Yourself:

Ask, "Why is that that all those 'unintended consequences' that wreak such havoc on us are all the result of Progressive policies? We have been hearing about those for the last hundred years. Are Progressives just stupid? If not, why do the repeat the same mistakes over and over again? Oh!? They are not stupid, just insane?"

Many arguments can be turned away with the "So, what?" response spoken in a confident and calm manner. Let them spit and sputter trying to deal with it!

Counter-responses:

#1. ‘People who scream racism are fascists. You’re just trying to suppress dissent against your tyrannical, irrational beliefs.

#2. ‘Typical liberal, using the character assassination tactics of a sleazebag trial lawyer to win an argument. You obviously have no integrity or credibility so you get no more say in the debate.’

#3. ‘Sorry, violation of separation of church and state. If you want to argue morality go build a church.’ I don’t subscribe to your religion.’

#4. Always give two lefist examples or more for every one they give.

What conservatives have to remember is that all liberals think they are on the side of justice and that conservatives should not even have the right to question them about it. I remember watching W. F. Buckley debate libs back in the seventies. Many times the lib, Ted Sorensen, Gore Vidal i.e., would immediately react to close questioning by calling Buckley a fascist something or other. In short, libs don’t expect that anyone will ever scrutinize anything they do. They can’t stand it.
