I Am An American

I too got the Census letter informing me that I would be getting a Census letter next week. The waste and futility of participating, as well as the perversion of the constitutional purpose of the Census has me down, but Scott Johnson over at Power Line and Mark Krikorian over at The Corner have a bright idea:

Writes Scott:

In Letter III of his Letters From an America Farmer (1782), J. Hector St. John De Crevecoeur famously asked: "What then is the American, this new man?" He answered: "He is an American, who, leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he holds. He has become an American by being received in the broad lap of our great Alma Mater. Here individuals of all races are melted into a new race of man, whose labors and posterity will one day cause great changes in the world. Americans are the western pilgrims." And Mark:

Fully one-quarter of the space on this year's form is taken up with questions of race and ethnicity, which are clearly illegitimate and none of the government's business (despite the New York Times' assurances to the contrary on today's editorial page). So until we succeed in building the needed wall of separation between race and state, I have a proposal. ... [W]e should answer Question 9 by checking the last option — "Some other race" — and writing in "American." It's a truthful answer but at the same time is a way for ordinary citizens to express their rejection of unconstitutional racial classification schemes. In fact, "American" was the plurality ancestry selection for respondents to the 2000 census in four states and several hundred counties.

I am an American. So -- "Some other race" -- "American." Pass it on.

Government spends millions of OUR dollars sending us a letter to tell us they will be sending us a letter in a couple of weeks..

I think this line is the BEST I've seen since a long time to describe the stupidity of the government with OUR money - and WHY we don't want more of it. Perfect line indeed!!!

I’ve always put my race as “HUMAN” but every now and then I consider going with “Northamerican-American”.

The letter saying the ‘stimulous’ check was coming really ticked me off too.. as did the check itself! What a freakin’ waste!

I received my neighbor’s stimulus check by mistake. I noticed it upon opening the envelope. I delivered it by hand. And then got worried as it took over 2 more weeks for my own check to arrive (wondering if it too had been misdelivered).

It may not have benefitted my bottom line, but I don’t want “my” check to go to some other home “randomly” all the same.

To not want to pay for goodies that you or your children are barred from would be “racist.” God save us from that word.

It only matters if you let it. I've been called every name in the book just about. I guess over the years I've just become oblivious to it.

As for my kids though, we intend to raise them to have no whitey guilt whatsoever. I will do everything I possibly can to instill in them the notion that there is never a time for which they should feel responsible for or obligated to fix wrongs that they had no hand in creating.

The letter I received yesterday telling me to expect the next letter showed my address, but had the city wrong (it showed the next city over) -- but it still got here. Question: If they have my city wrong, am I still obligated to respond -- and a follow-up question is, if they have the city wrong, how am I to know they won't have other incorrect information -- or misuse the information they do have?

My first instinct is to return it marked "incorrect address, return to sender", and see what happens.

I accidentally opened a neighbors bank statement because it was delivered to me.. I hand delivered it as well..

I'm not surprised your Stimulous check took so long.. the post office is certainly erratic.

BTW.. I was a hold out, but now I believe it's a good idea, when possible, to have all checks direct deposited..

Got the letter announcing another letter, too. Good thing the commercial junk mail senders don’t do it!
