The Hawaii Department of Health claims to have an original copy of Barack Obama's birth certificate, right?
In fact, it is this established "fact" that has persuaded so many people there is nothing to the question of eligibility.
After all, an official in Hawaii has made a public pronouncement that she has inspected the document and declared on her own authority that Obama is a "natural born American" and thus eligible to serve as president.
For many Americans, that settles the question.
However, now a new version of the story is emerging.
The United Kingdom's Sky News reported Saturday: "Authorities in Hawaii have provided an electronic record of Obama's birth because the paper copy was destroyed in a fire which wiped out much of the state's archives."
Which is it?
Does Hawaii actually have an original long-form, paper birth certificate for Obama, or was it destroyed in a fire?
It seems the story is ever-changing.
And that's why it's time for Obama to come clean.
There is little question the heavily Democratic state of Hawaii has no interest in providing any information that would disqualify the first president claiming to be from that state.
If indeed the state has a copy of the original birth certificate, as Director of Health Dr. Chiyome Fukino claims, it should be no problem for Obama to give her permission to release it publicly and, once and for all, settle the controversy that has resulted in that state being inundated with inquiries from curious American citizens.
Fukino has released two public statements on this matter.(continued)

What date was the fire? Is there an accident report? Insurance claims? Police report? Was anyone prosecuted for arson? Newspaper reports? What proves this fire, and when was it?
These are questions to be asking now.
My Mom worked in a local hospital in medical records for
about 27 years,,,
they kept copies of ALL records of birth/death/etc. in a
FIRE PROOF vault for everybody that was ever treated there.
She has had to hand carry certified copies to court in
many parts of this country,,,
If he won’t produce the Vault Copy of his birth then that
tells me beyond any doubt that he was not born there,,,!
You see both the state and the hospital would have the
record of his birth...

Some freepers already researched this because of the original story and there are no press reports of a fire.

“destroyed in a fire?”
Uh huh....sure it was.
Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure it was.
LOL!
“4. Is there any contemporary mention of the fire or record of it in the Dept. of Vital Records?”
Good!
There is nothing unusual going on here. A dog ate it right before it was destroyed in a fire. Then they shredded the dog’s charred remains. The person who said they saw the actual copy was mistakenly looking in an ashtray- not a file cabinet. They made one up in Photoshop which is just the same as having the original. Just ask Dan Rather.
Obama 'Birther' Row Rears Its Head Again 12:21pm UK, Saturday February 27, 2010 Greg Milam, US correspondent
One of the more bizarre rows in American politics has resurfaced as the country prepares for crucial mid-term elections this year. The so-called 'birthers' movement, which questions whether Barack Obama was born in the US and is therefore a legitimate president, has cropped up on the campaign. A representative in Arizona's state senate has even introduced a 'birth certificate bill' because she says constituents are so worried.
The White House has consistently dismissed the issue. Authorities in Hawaii have provided an electronic record of Obama's birth because the paper copy was destroyed in a fire which wiped out much of the state's archives. But J D Hayworth, who is running against former presidential candidate John McCain in the race to be Arizona Senator, questioned Obama's credentials on a radio show. McCain, who lost out to Obama in 2008, criticised Hayworth for giving oxygen to the 'birther' debate. And supporters at one of Hayworth's rallies openly questioned the president's right to be in office. Alan Becker said: "If it was in question and someone questioned me about my birth certificate I would give it to them and say 'Here it is'. "Why can't he do that?
Jimmy Carter: 'Claims racist' Democrats in Arizona have dismissed the bill, introduced by Representative Judy Burges. Kyrsten Sinema said: "This bill is what I would call patently ridiculous and offensive. "The truth is that he was born in the United States and has provided that proof time and time again." The 'birthers' are perhaps the most bizarre of the protest movements against the president. Genuine concerns in the US are often being drowned out by more extreme voices. Former president Jimmy Carter has suggested that much of the opposition to Barack Obama is based on his race.
But Hayworth, who says the Obama issue is now settled, believes questions remain. He said: "We require voters to demonstrate they are who they say they are, I think everyone on the ballot should do that."
