I cant believe I agree with Sarah Palin.
But shes right. Kids of public figures should be off limits to media scrutiny, mockery and savaging.
Especially if a child lives with a disability. That in-your-face Family Guy bit (which doesnt deserve repeating) was disgusting and a$$hole-y, as Palin might say.
Remember the nasty remarks said about Amy Carter and Chelsea during their awkward adolescence? And how outraged we were? Raise your hand if you think you looked your best in junior high. Didnt think so. Imagine how youd feel if your child was born with Down syndrome. And comedians thought it was OK to mock him. Wouldnt you feel outraged if comedians and cartoons mocked him mercilessly?
As a mother (which is all I have in common with Palin), I would make it my business to straighten out the offenders. Good for her to vent her anger on her own station.
Its bad enough that female progeny of famous folk (politicians included) are scrutinized and over-analyzed far more often than male children. Or they are blessed with a political parent who announces, Shes available! Now we have to call out tactless talk-show hosts and cartoon writers for being thoughtless and heartless?
I guess so, because seems folks just dont get it.
That un-redeeming cartoon pierced the hearts of those whose lives have been enriched by a Down child. And those who created that bit should be ashamed of themselves.
Disability movements have made so much progress over the years. Accessible buildings, streets, public transportation and educational access all point to a growing awareness of a large portion of our population. And still, we get nasty schoolyard antics broadcast on the Internet, for all to mock. In HD!
Family Guy has always ridden comedys fringe, usually successfully. Its no Simpsons, but it has its fans.
Minus one now. This time, FG not only jumped the shark, it made me agree with Sarah Palin.
For that, there is no forgiveness.
Hmmm. That's all she has in common with Sarah?
Lemme see......
I am a woman, a mother, a wife, a sister, a daughter. I run a business, (nothing as big as the State of Alaska, but still), I've worked since I was 12, I fish in both summer and winter, and can bait my own hook with worms and minnows. I've snowmobiled, camped, and lived in the wilderness for as long as two weeks....point being, this lady needs to take another look at herself, and at Sarah, and would find she has a lot more in common than just being a mother.
Oh golly gee whiz, you think I'm a liberal because I said Trig Palin and the Bush girls were off limits!!! Whatever will I do now???? How will I ever manage to get on with my life????
As I’ve noted before, I haven’t seen the episode. I haven’t even seen a clip of the scene in question. But I do think you’re right in that the “Family Guy” crew really set up Palin.
I also suspect that Fox, which airs “Family Guy,” knew what was going on and did not object because the ensuing controversy would generate viewers/ratings on Fox News. It’s nice how that works out.
Is anybody angry with Rupert Murdoch?
I think Sarah got punked by both Seth MacFarlane and Rupert Murdoch. That must really hurt.
