Yikes ... Sarah Palin's Right!
The Wrap ^ | February 18, 2010 | Naomi Serviss

Posted on 02/18/2010 2:41:33 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

I can’t believe I agree with Sarah Palin.

But she’s right. Kids of public figures should be off limits to media scrutiny, mockery and savaging.

Especially if a child lives with a disability. That in-your-face “Family Guy” bit (which doesn’t deserve repeating) was disgusting and a$$hole-y, as Palin might say.

Remember the nasty remarks said about Amy Carter and Chelsea during their awkward adolescence? And how outraged we were? Raise your hand if you think you looked your best in junior high. Didn’t think so. Imagine how you’d feel if your child was born with Down syndrome. And comedians thought it was OK to mock him. Wouldn’t you feel outraged if comedians and cartoons mocked him mercilessly?

As a mother (which is all I have in common with Palin), I would make it my business to straighten out the offenders. Good for her to vent her anger on her own station.

It’s bad enough that female progeny of famous folk (politicians included) are scrutinized and over-analyzed far more often than male children. Or they are blessed with a political parent who announces, “She’s available!” Now we have to call out tactless talk-show hosts and cartoon writers for being thoughtless and heartless?

I guess so, because seems folks just don’t get it.

That un-redeeming cartoon pierced the hearts of those whose lives have been enriched by a Down child. And those who created that bit should be ashamed of themselves.

Disability movements have made so much progress over the years. Accessible buildings, streets, public transportation and educational access all point to a growing awareness of a large portion of our population. And still, we get nasty schoolyard antics broadcast on the Internet, for all to mock. In HD!

“Family Guy” has always ridden comedy’s fringe, usually successfully. It’s no “Simpsons,” but it has its fans.

Minus one now. This time, “FG” not only jumped the shark, it made me agree with Sarah Palin.

For that, there is no forgiveness.

Miss Serviss needs to go the extra mile and understand what she is talking about. This is no trivial matter.
There is a deep and abiding chasm between the efete snobbery of liberalism and the honest sincerity of Palin. Serviss has dusted off the surface of her own prejudice. now she needs to peer deeply at her own reflection.

Did you know that the voice of the Down syndrome character in Family Guy was performed by a young actress with Down syndrome, Andrea Friedman....

Friedman, who's appeared in several TV shows, thought the scene was funny.

Just saying.... I haven't seen the episode myself.

************

The scene was not funny. It is a simple matter to bamboozle a Down’s syndrome person into being pleasant about an insult. They are naturally positive and trusting.
The segment was intended as a snide slap at Palin and her child, plain and simple. It succeeded as a slap in the face of the program and its producer. It crossed the line of common decency. Look for ratings to plummet.

I agree the kids should be off limits, but when politicians use them as props in their PR machinations they invite scrutiny. The Obamas do it with the girls and Palin did it every time she trotted Trig out during her book tour.

She can’t win with you: If she’d left her kids back in Alaska, she’d be abandoning them and an unfit mother, but if they travel with her, she’s using them as props. Misogynist much?

I would qualify that by saying if the kid chooses to enter the public forum themselves then they're fair game. Trig Palin is off-limits, Meghan McCain is not.

Plus, Miss McCain is not a child, she’s an adult.

The Bush girls are adults. Chelsea Clinton is an adult. As long as they are pursuing private lives I think they should be left alone; child, teen, or adult.

So to you there were only two options...leave ‘em back home or trot them out on stage every stop as political props?

I’m tired of talking to Palinistas, it’s like debating with children.

Miss McCain is not pursuing a private life, those others are. However, when Chelsea was campaigning for her mother as an adult, she was fair game.

Did I somehow force you to post to this thread? There's a lot more of us than there are Paulestinians and Romneybots. Since you've been here since the Ninties, why don't you go complain to the Mods that an uppity 2006 FReeper is not showing you all the respect you deserve?

Not funny Ms Friedman.

What? What would the left say if she left Trig with a nanny?

Friedman, who's appeared in several TV shows, thought the scene was funny.

She was being paid. Supporting Sarah Palin's position against the Hollywood Left might have jeopardized her getting more work.

It might have been funny if they hadn't mentioned the fact the child's mother was the former Governor of Alaska. They were throwing barbs at Palin, they changed the child to a girl and used a real Downs Syndrome person to do the voice so they could discredit Palin when she complained which, of course, they have done.

Now, let me ask you, and I ask this as a person who knows several Downs Syndrome adults and likes their sweet ways and good humor, do you really think a Downs Syndrome person is best qualified to judge if this was funny or not? Think about that.

No harsh judgment, no ridicule or any type of bad thoughts have gone into that question, nothing but reality. Do you think for one minute that they didn't use this girl to do the voice just because they knew no one would question her mental ability to judge the humor of this skit? I call that the lowest of the low, the epitome of scumism.

LOL. You seem to bring Palin up every waking moment.

Keep up the love.

SARAH IS A MOTHER! She doesn’t use day-care or nannies like you effete liberal jerks. SHE is raising her child. That is why she has him with her. She is taking the responsibility of her children on her own shoulders and at the same time trying to help America find its way.
