"I pulled my hand back and said: '...oh, wait. My husband and I both work in the oil industry, which makes our money dirty and unacceptable to your company. I guess I won't be getting anything today.' And with that, we turned and walked proudly out of the store to the amazement of those around us."

I guess they didn’t learn from Linen’s & Things.
If you are in the endangered list, you can’t afford to turn away any customers.
Good for the citizens of Alberta! And keep your boycott on — the damage is done and some things can’t be undone.
I wonder if those idiots at BB&B ever considered what the effects would be for their business if all “Dirty” petroleum based items were removed from the face of the Earth..
Excellent !!!!!
Thank you for the post....
What did Linens and Things do? Close down their parking lots so that people had to use public transportation to get there?
That sounds like a really petty thing to do.

I didn’t make that clear. The point is that Linens & Things (and Circuit City and others) proved that even large retailers are a few customers away from demise.
Only a foolhardy retailer takes any political stance, especially when inside the region of those they diss.
I don’t have a problem with people that oppose the petroleum industry, as long as they don’t use any petroleum products.
“Such a miscalculation calls the intelligence of management into question.”
PC followers don’t employ intelligence.

Thanks, THAT I agree with, for sure. Why tick off half (or more) of your potential (and/or existing) customers for NO REASON. Here in Texas, Perry Homes is one of the largest builders, and its boss, Robert Perry, may be the single biggest Republican contributor in the state. Do his customers know it? No. Should they? No. Has he made a fortune? Yes. But he keeps things separate...it’s not that hard, and it’s simply common sense (I was going to say smart business...but it’s common sense).
I suppose Rosa Parks and the Woolworths lunch counter protesters were petty, too...
If BBB eliminated all of its products that contained or were produced using petroleum products it would most likely have nothing to sell. I am sick and tired of hearing the catch phrases green and sustainable thrown around as a selling point.
No, not at all, but, IMO, this ain’t no where near that.
LOVE IT!!!!
Linens & Things was never really a large retailer, they peaked at about 1/10 the size of BB&B which irritated BB&B enough that they went on a major assault to under cut L&T (starting about a month before L&T showed up I couldn’t open the mailbox without getting some sort of circular/ coupon from BB&B) and killed them. It was kind of nice for a while, but once L&T went away BB&B went back to their too high prices and I went back to waiting 6 more months for the same items to show up at Target for 1/2 the price.
