The North Carolina public school system is planning on making a minor change to the US history curriculum that will be taught to high school students; and by minor change, I mean they are going to cut out 400 years of United States history.

I’m surprised they are starting as early as 1877. That implies that something important may have happened before the socialist took power in January of 2009.

If these were my kids they would be home schooled. My dau-in-las did (widowed) and the kids turned out fine.

1950's: IIRC, American History in grade school: we went from 1492 to Plymouth Rock circa 1600 to Rev War to Civil War to WWII. It was very bland...Nothing was memorable except Washington was the first President and Lincoln was the Civil War President.

Even High School was not intense. Hell, kids didn't even know who the President was or his history. Pretty sad.

haha....That’s not what I mean, I mean they are going to cut out the discovery and colonization of the country (1492 and later). Sorry, I should have been more clear

Parents, don’t be victims. Get a good textbook and have your kids read it at home. You can do this.

That certainly is a viable option, and I plan on doing that with my kids; but you have to admit that it is ridiculous that a public school would even consider doing this

Absolutely, it is ridiculous. And I am sorry for other peoples’ kids who get a truncated education.

But I don’t want to see FReeper types being like the woman who let her kid die from lack of asthma meds. The government denied her the prescription benefit (erroneously), so she didn’t get the meds, and her kid died.

She should have just bought the meds herself, even though she was “entitled.”

Well, his dad should have seen to it, but who knows where he was.

Hey, a local church should host an after school history class, free, and invite the high school kids. They could teach the early history from a Christian perspective!!!

I bet the schools put the history back in pronto!!!

How will the schools explain movies and books depicting that period of history?

Buy an old History Textbook [Ebay or Amazon - compare for best price] Written and Printed Prior to 1877 [why'd they choose 1877?] and be sure your children and grandchildren read it or have it read to them.

Hmm, I’ll have to get back to you on that one. I am sure they can figure out a way to fix that problem

I encourage everyone to that.

I am not sure exactly why they chose 1877. I suspect they chose the date because that is the year that reconstruction ended.

The whole story, is that children will get a limited teaching of earlier history in elementary and middle school, but they will not get any history before 1877 in high school. It is however just a proposal, not yet set in stone. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,584758,00.html

You are being disingenuous or are sadly mistaken.

I did a google news search and found out that it is the US history curriculum for 11th graders that is affected by this change. History prior to 1877 will be taught in grades 10 and below, but they feel that by the 11th grade, the kids should concentrate on 1877 to the present day. And it is a proposal, not fact yet. Being discussed. If you were really concerned, you might give the curriculum committee a call. I am sure your opinion will be welcomed.
