Its over folks. Not just the Massachusetts Senate election but any Democrat health care reform bill. Democrats chances of passing a health care reform bill that looks like anything like we have seen is about zero. The rest of the battle against Democrats till the November election is downhill from here. If you had been watching MSNBC the past few days you could see the democrat party and Obama White House preparing for this humiliating loss. Story after story was about Martha Coakley's coming defeat and about how she screwed up. Last night Chris Matthews did a 2 hour special on Obamas first year in history. Tonight Matthews is reporting on what went wrong during Obamas first year. Was this great timing or what? In fact tonight on MSNBC Rachael Maddow took issue with Matthews assumption that something went wrong with the Democrat party and started an argument with him about it (a classic moment.)
Obama and the democrat leadership have a terrible job. They cant give up this battle where defeat is certain. You will hear lots about the various options democrats have to pass a bill. The truth is that even without this special election Democrats would have had a hell of a time combining the two bills and passing a single one with its popularity so low. In fact it is doubtful that the House and Senate could have even passed the same two bills in January again let alone a single bill. Now this election defeat will send shock waves through democrats up for election in November. The leaderships options have gotten even worse. Republicans smell blood as does the MSM, and democrats are wounded and cornered with few options.
So what are the options Democrats have proposed ? ( I saw many on MSNBC the Obama channel tonight .) Option 1 is to convince the House Democrats to pass the Senate bill with no change requiring no new Senate vote. The problem with this is the Senate bill is unpopular with everyone, even liberals. Option 2 is to pass the Senate bill as in option 1 but promise house democrats that it will be fixed in a later Senate (50 vote) budget reconciliation bill. This would require convincing the House democrats that the bill would be fixed by the Senate later (after being burned multiple times). And many parts of the bill could not be changed using reconciliation. For example reconciliation could probably not be used to create a public health plan. Option #3 is to pass a bill fast before Senator Scott Brown is seated. I will predict that Democrats are now too spooked by this loss to try to move on the Health Reform bill before he is seated. In fact Jim Webb and Barney Frank have already come out tonight with statements opposing passing a bill before he is seated.
Obama is now going to be even more tempted than he was earlier in the year to get a bill by compromise with some republicans. He will make the argument to democrats that compromise is the only option. But now Republicans even RINOs are embolden by the election loss and polls, moderate democrats are scared to vote and the liberals are still convinced that it was compromise that created the crappy Senate bill that everyone hates, and is what led to the Massachusetts Senate loss. Once again, its the perfect position to be in if you are the minority. Enjoy!
I love the stink of Dem sweat in the morning....
If they hadn’t insisted on shutting out the Repubs they could have gotten something passed but no, they had to play the arrogance card and now the Repubs are going to hold together. They can read the mood and being the politicians that they are they will not support Obama on anything save for military issues.
Sleep well!
I’m with OldEagle.
I’ll celebrate when the Vampire King has been removed from our White House, not until.
I’m not sure they won’t do something truly awful next.
Tinfoil hat firmly in place, I know. But I don’t trust these people not to do something extreme to force their agenda.
I love that pic. Funny!
Here is hoping that Schmuckie Schumer is next, not so much his hand-puppet Gillibrand, but the Schmuckster himself .. this year in 2010 when *both* are up for 're-election'
Gillibrand is just a blip on the radar and can easily be taken out by any decent Repub challenger (I know I know, this is NY, but can I dream of such a Pub candidate?) ... but the Putz-meister really needs to be taken down a notch or two also, he's had his arrogant way for way too long and needs a good smackdown from a candidate such as a Scott Brown type. Dunno if there are any in NY, but if there are any then this MA election might inspire one or two .. ya never know
As long as the Republicans don’t do something incredibly stupid like vote for amnesty or cap and trade to be “green” among other things...
Well, to the house chambers, to the halls of the Senate and even more, to the back rooms of the whitehouse, I have this to say;
Thanks. Without your ignorant stance, many of my fellow Americans would not be at this point. A point where we take our Liberty back!
Let's throw them a rock!
I doubt they are here tonight, they turned off the TV and computer like we did November 2008. More like WE are lurking there!
I won’t celebrate until Brown cast the vote to defeat this HealthScare Scam........ not until it’s etched in stone that the HealthScare scam is history.
ROFL!
Wonder how the Big O is sleeping tonight?
They all felt the earthquake tonight that the electorate is pissed,I mean really pissed. They will all tread lightly. We need to move on getting steele canned as rnc chair.I dont have a clue how that could be made to happen.Do you?
This is a huge upset, but I don’t expect the R party to take all the possible senate seats in 2010. Each race has funny little details that can cause it to veer off course. Not all R senate candidates will be as skillful as Brown, nor all D candidates as clueless as Coakley. Plus the unemployment rate could go down when Obama buys jobs with the rest of the Porkulus (never mind they are temporary).
Still, Brown answered my prayers. One might say a political miracle.
Ironically, Brown may have just saved the Dem party from killing itself with Obamacare. Or maybe not passing it will be worse for them. What do you think?
Obama could have offered nice ambassadorships to a few congressional Dems looking into the jaws of death, but I don’t think he can buy them all off now. Health care deform is dead! Unless Republicans hand it back to them.
probably sleeping like a baby...he doesn’t think like real people, he doesn’t have a heart...he has no shame.
see #57
icwhatudo, that’s fabulous
