This past weekend it was revealed that Harry Reid in 2008 referred to then-Senator Obama as "light skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." The reaction to these revelations came as expected: Republicans called for Reid to resign from his leadership position, while Democrats circled the wagons around the Senate Majority Leader. Despite their criticisms, Republicans have missed the full meaning of Reid's statement in 2008 as well as his recent clarification.
While the immediate acceptance of Reid's apology from those who censured Rush Limbaugh's attempt to buy an NFL franchise is striking, the last part of Reid's comment and his subsequent statement from over the weekend give away his original motive. In his comments the Senate Majority Leader explicitly acknowledged that using race is a valuable instrument in the Democratic political playbook. When Reid noted that President Obama had "no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one" he recognized the ability to fluctuate racial accents as a political asset. In his apology he only regretted "using such a poor choice of words" not the meaning of the statement itself. In the defense of the Nevada senator, other liberals have only reinforced Reid's admission.

but it was meant as a compliment,
now how Reid telling Obama that he doesn’t look or sound black is a compliment, how is that not just as racist as the original comments?
I have officially changed my tag line in Dingy Harry’s honor. Come on in, liberals. Call me a racist. Please.
okay, Obama is planning immigration reform, negro is the Spanish word for black -— oh -— How is that going to play out?
I’m still wondering if the whole birth certificate issue might actually come down to Obozo being listed as white rather than black.
It wouldn’t hurt his eligibility but I think it would seriously cripple him with black democrats.
The o saying that Reid is ‘on the right side of history’ says it all - he is liberal so he stays.
Reid was suggesting that someone blacker than Obamao would not be acceptable.
I do know that we’re fooling ourselves if we believe Obama is the last “first black president”. When the democrats need it, they’ll be sure to remind us that Obama isn’t entirely black and that its time for a fully black president.
What is ironic an sad in all of this is that the GOP has become the uber PC hall monitors that they always accuse the Left of being. This whole affair does nothing but make the already weak GOP weaker. Instead of using this ridiculous brouhaha into looking at the true hypocrisy in DC such as the Black Caucus, NAACP, Eric Holder, Black Liberation Theology etc the GOP is just digging a bigger hole that ultimately squelches all dissension and real debate on the racial BS that is destroying America. Many in the GOP are showing once again just why they are not deserving of support.
Ole Dingy Harry is a rascist. There it is said once and for all. But unfortunately now i will be called a old aged senile senate obstructionist because I called harry ole dingy. if the shoe fits wear it. Senile Harry ready for the old folks home because he is in stage 1 alzheimers disease
Obummer is lying again. He said he knows what’s in Harry Reid/s heart. Other than Reid himself there’s only One who knows what’s in his heart.
Yours truly,
Harry 'The Hood' Reid!
I'm glad someone else is thinking. From an etymological standpoint, negro is short for negroid. When whites are referenced, they're often "caucasian," a derivative of caucasoid. And the final racial delineator is mongoloid, referring to those of Asian descent.
The fact that negro was a marginally offensive term used up through the 1960s doesn't make it patently racist. The roots of the word come from scientific roots, and I'm frankly pissed off that we prefer to call blacks "African Americans" instead of black or negro. Call me a caucasian, I don't give a damn.
This is akin to the militant feminist movement wanting to change the spelling of women to wymyn because the word "man" or "men" is in the root. It's part of the root of the word, dammit! Get over yourselves. These leftist movements want to redefine words that "a bunch of white men" coined millenia ago. Like our esteemed leader said, "they're just words."
Hillary puts on a southern accent when she wants to use one.
An interesting aside...
From the Hawaii government site...http://hawaii.gov/dhhl/applicants/appforms/applyhhl
Applying for Hawaiian Home Lands
Birth certificates (Certificates of Live Birth and Certifications of Live Birth) and Certificates of Hawaiian Birth are the primary documents used to determine native Hawaiian qualification.
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands accepts both Certificates of Live Birth (original birth certificate) and Certifications of Live Birth because they are official government records documenting an individuals birth.
And what is written across the top of the controversial "birth certificate"?
Certification of Live Birth, not Certificate of Live Birth
Are reporters really this lax or just stupid?
(how long till it's scrubbed?)
In fact, in the Caribbean Spanish predominant here in Tampa, “negro” and “negra” are frequently used as terms of affection, or as pet names.
I think it’s just a matter of time before Americans get to the point where all the racial and ethnic hypersensitivity gets too tedious and society just drops the whole thing.
Are Latinos more sophisticated than we? Or do they simply realize that PC is a stupid, energy-wasting pile of BS?
To an extent I agree with you, but as a homo sapien I would still object to being called a "homo" (for short)...;-)
If you read everything that has been posted here on the subject, you might come to the conclusion that Zer0 doesn’t have a normal birth certificate.
He might well have been a home birth which was recorded by his granny according to the loosy-goosy Hawaiian rules of that era. Or he could have been born outside the country and allowed a filing in Hawaii by a relative, which was permissable in 1961.
Obama may resist making his birth documents public simply because they are rudimentary, not certified by a doctor, and could raise more questions about him than they would answer.
Exactly. Most pubbies will turn themselves inside out to win over the 12% of the population that will never vote for them, under any circumstances.
Better to simply be honest and promote policies that will benefit society as a whole and forget the identity politics. That crap is the Dhimmi way and it always ends up being an ugly mess.
I think you are right on the money with that assessment.
The Dingy One strikes me as a Jack Mormon who plays the liberal role for public consumption but talks like Archie Bunker in private.
