The traditional Top Ten Breakthroughs of the Decade lists have been appearing in science-related publications. One breakthrough, however, is conspicuously missing from every list Ive seen so far. Im talking about the new understanding of the role and proper dosage of the sunshine vitamin D.
The scientific consensus that has held sway for four decades regarding both exposure to the sun and vitamin D has collapsed. What has emerged in place of the old settled science is the knowledge that most people in America are seriously vitamin D deficient or insufficient. The same is true for Canada and Europe, and the implications are staggering.

It is so important biologically that early humans could manufacture D even during famines.

Holick says that from Los Angeles south, UVB is present in sunshine year round though it is blocked by clouds. Even the palest among us will be unable to get sufficient UVB from sunshine in more northern latitudes. In Boston, for example, UVB is blocked by the angle of the sun November through February. Edmonton, Canada, has no UVB mid-October through mid-April. Young people can store enough D during summer months to make it through the winter. Older people cannot.

Thanks for the ping!
Make sure you take D3....Mine are small yellow capsules. I’m up to 10,000 units a day .
What’s the difference between Just Vitamin D and D3?
I see both for sale on the shelves but have heard that D3 is better somehow.
Very interesting article. I now feel justified in soaking up the sun in my pool each summer. Thanks.
Why avoid calcium supplements?
***Northern latitudes do not get enough sun 9 months out of the year, period.***
To top it off, I live in Seattle... I’m screwed.
“I live in Seattle...”
I live in NE Ohio, 2nd to Seattle for lack of sunshine. In the late 70’s, early 80’s I lived in Northern Ireland...it rains more there! (but you might know that)
So get yourself a good D3 supplement and take about 10,000 units a day. Not expensive if you find the right one.
The medical community is behind the eight ball on a LOT of issues.
We found that out with the kidney stones that mr. mm deals with. They are coming around, but the natural health community, which the medical community scorns and sneers at, was right about the need for more calcium, more Vitamin D, and fewer oxylates.
Altitude has to play a role as well. Those figures for latitude only work if you’re out on the prairie in the Mid-West. Going up works like going south because there is less atmosphere to filter out the rays.
I don’t have any clue about what the ratio would be though. It would be an interesting study, however.

Territorial Seed Company is the best. I just got an email from them.
I’ve got my wish list already made out.
Having spent half of the day in a dermatological surgeon’s office having a basal cell carcinoma removed for a second time - an affliction reputedly brought on by “too much sunlight” - I’m afraid I’m having considerable trouble trying to determine the appropriate balance of sun exposure/avoidance......
No surprise there....
Ping... (thanks, neverdem!)
Thanks for the ping!
I take 5000 per day. Most drs. where I live (SE TX) are prescribing 50,000 per week.
They get plenty of sun and plenty of Vitamin D
Average life expectancy: 45
