First I heard of this! Looks like it was slipped in under the radar! Obama wants farms to start planting trees instead of crops! It's help global warming! Combine this with the ethanol scam and can odd/even days at the grocery store be far behind? WashingtonTimes

Isn’t the term “our” food supply just a little bit collectivist?
Considering that a lot of American farmers are paid NOT to produce too much, I’m not sure this is something to worry about.
Combine it with the plan to farm in Detroit and it starts to become clear. We bitter clingers are too hard to control out here in flyover country.
Please forgive me.
My point would be that Zero affects the food supply only of those people who let him. What he appearently is intent upon doing is crippling traditional American family farming as a productive industry.
At one time we had a free market system. Every farm was on its own for production and marketing. Then the elected ones decided that they were smarter than the farmers so they had the government take over the marketing systems, and then began legislating on production.
Farmers did not have a voice in it. Congress critters elected by urban votes began controlling the farmers. It is a dangerous game.
People seem to forget that food is not made in the back of the grocery store.
.
I had already planted many hundreds of various types of trees on my own while very young
I have never seen one (1) politian plant just one (1) tree on his own without a TV/media crew of propagansists/campaigners
Enough of the BS from DC
No credibiity
Too much exposure
If I remember correctly. these same like-minded morons made fun of Reagan when he encouraged tree planting...but NOT in place of food.
Stalin & Mao killed millions with their farming programs, so it’s not out of the equation with the Obama crowd, I’m sure.
Fruit trees and various nut-producing trees may not be such a bad idea. Particularly things like black walnuts, which is a VERY fast-growing tree, and when the harvest of nuts have completed some thirty years of production, the tree is also an excellent finish wood when logged and sent to the sawmill or veneer mill.
And apple trees, we do not have nearly enough apples. The overall problem with trees is that it takes some twenty to thirty years to harvest the crop, so the land is tied up for at least that length of time.
If you want REALLY fast-growing plant life, plant and cultivate something like pumpkins or even kudzu. If these plants are harvested regularly for biomass, and the biomass used to make some form of fuel (alcohol is not particularly efficient), two stones may be used to kill one bird.
A better use of this biomass may be the MUCH more efficient production of a sort of crude oil substance. Already in use in reducing the waste from a turkey processing plant, a process called “thermal depolymerization”, could be applied to the harvested biomass, and depending on the overall mix of the organic materials put into the slurry, and the heat maintained at various different levels, the process proceeds in a matter of hours, producing saline water and various grades of a substance called, generically, kerogen, similar to the substance which makes up crude oil.
Incidentally, this process may be applied to sewage, old tires, sawmill and logging waste, most household trash and even old mattresses. There is some input of energy in the form of natural gas, but the output still exceeds the energy content of the natural gas used by a considerable margin. That ratio may not always apply with the production of ethanol from grain or cellulosic sources.
“Some parts are edible.”
If necessary, plant nut trees. The country has gone nuts, and we can eat them. Or, fruit trees. They have seeds, some of which are edible. The Capitol Mall could be covered in buckeyes—which are poisonous to humans; apt.
I have no idea how Detroit ‘farmers’ will stop pilfering from their crops. There will be gangs of fruits and veggie heisters. Instead of the Crips, we’ll have Crops.
Actually most of the O2 is produced by blue-green algae in the ocean not the rain forest.
The only thing the investors in Detroit farms will grow is bank accounts. When you talk about farming on old factory grounds, you have to look at the quality of the soil which will be contaminated and need restoration. That means big government bucks right off the top.
A better idea would be to let the trees grow on that land but that makes too much sense and too little money.
Plant that fruity nut back in Kenya.
Hes going with the Mugabe approach.
