The Best Of "O Holy Night" (Videos)
Backcountry Notes ^ | December 25, 2009 | Jay Henderson

My favorite Christmas song is "O Holy Night" -- no surprise, as "Night" is named as favorite more often than any other Christmas composition. The song began its existence as "Cantique de Noël" in 1847 and was restated in English soon thereafter. According to legend, "O Holy Night" was the first music broadcast on radio, in 1906. First up: The incomparable Enrico Caruso, in the original French, recorded in 1916.

I got that about a week ago and forwarded it to everyone I know, as well as posted it onto Facebook. It is a true Classic and Thank You for posting it here!!! However, I’m afraid some people might choke on their eggnog from laughing so hard...it should come with a warning not to sip “beverages” while watching it because it is a choking hazard! Merry Christmas FRiend!

Kate Smith is good, but is there an Ethel Merman one? When I lived in New Orleans I used to make my friends stagger around the French Quarter and sing Ethel Merman Christmas Carols...we don’t know if she did them, but it sure would be freakin’ awesome if she did...;-)

Thank you for sharing this with us.

Yesterday, I saw a rerun of Frazier where the father had been talked into performing at a church Christmas pageant. He had to sing O Holy Night. He was ok until he came to “O Night Divine...” and he simply could not hit the high notes for “divine.” It made me laugh because I can't hit those notes either.

A Merry and Blessed Christmas to you and yours.

Dude! That’s like chancing upon a Helen Thomas photo when you’re not expecting. :)

Oh, no I didn’t! It’s the fourth video embed down. I know better than to mess with Kate Smith fans. Now, put away the tar and feathers . . . .

Also my fave — when sung in operatic style, just superb!

"My favorite Christmas song is "O Holy Night" --"

Yea, mine too - saw C.C. Wynans sing it at an Amy Grant Christmas concert many years ago - goose-bumps and tears all around.
Man, when she hit the "...fall on your knees..." part, even she was crying - it was pretty powerfull.

Merry Christmas, and pray for our troops far from thier families today.
