Bill O'Reilly recently talked about it in positive terms, now today Time Magazine (online at least) has a story about Advent Conspiracy. The following is an excerpt from Time as featured on Yahoo where it is getting thousands of hits:
As you might expect Time has done a surly hack-job on a movement designed to get Christmas back to its original intention.
"McKinley is one of the leaders of an effort to do away with the frenzied activity and extravagant gift-giving of a commercial Christmas. Through a savvy viral video and marketing effort, the so-called Advent Conspiracy movement has exploded. Hundreds of churches on four continents and in at least 17 countries have signed up to participate. The Advent Conspiracy video has been viewed more than a million times on YouTube, and the movement boasts nearly 45,000 fans on Facebook. Baseball superstar Albert Pujols is a supporter he spoke at a church event in St. Louis, Mo., to endorse the effort."
"so-called Advent Conspiracy" the writer says. It's like saying the so-called "Time Magazine". Advent Conspiracy is the actual name of the organization!

Advent has been celebrated for centuries and only now the media is waking up to it? Go figure. It’s nothing they would like - more quiet time, more acts of love towards families/friends/strangers, more prayer/contemplation, more focus towards preparing oneself to celebrate Christmas with a clear conscience.
I think I was already on board before it had a name.
We don’t really “spend less”. Actually, we’re spending a bit more this year than we have in the past two, as our financial situation has substantially improved — “financial peace” is a glorious thing.
But, we don’t ever spend out of obligation, and we don’t go into debt for it. We give, according to what we have, out of appreciation to friends and family that were there for us when we were in hard times. We give to kids in CPS custody, poor children, etc. as much as we can. We are blessed, so we bless others.
Christ has always been the center of the season. Celebrating. Time with family — quality and quantity. Gift-giving. Hectic trips visiting extended family — we end up celebrating Christmas about 5-times inside of two weeks. Our first “Christmas” is this Saturday.
Christmas is, and always has been, my favorite time of year. So, it doesn’t sound like that revolutionary of a concept to me. But, that’s probably a good thing.

We have not used any form of credit to purchase Christmas gifts in over 20 years. Some years we have been lavish and others have been small but the best time in our family is when we go to the candle light Christmas Eve service at our church.
The presents are nice and the children really focus on them a bit but even they want to go to church and tell us that is their favorite thing.
