I knew some Birchers when I was younger.

They were absolutely, categorically nuts. They were warning about crazy things, they told me the moon landing was faked, that United Fruit was at the center of all communist expansion in the world, etc. ad nauseum. I hope they were not representative of the Birch society, but suspect they were.

Actually the dollar is only defined as a specific weight and fineness of silver (and it hasn't changed since 1791-2 when it was codified in law). Eagles were some weight and fineness of gold that has varied some, but ten dollars were always one eagle.

The best book on this is Edwin Vieira's Pieces of Eight. Unfortunately it seems to be out of print and used copies cost many FRNs.

I think your 412.5 and 90% number is how they made dollar coins. (371.25/0.9 = 412.5)
