In my interview with Obamas 2008 campaign manager David Plouffe, he draws comparisons between the down days of Obamas bid in mid 2007 and controversies such as Rev Wright and the difficulties of his first year. The lesson, he says, is that stay true to the message and the strategy and you shall prevail. A campaign is very different from running the country however as it has one goal. Mr Obama has several, even if they share common themes.
His performance of the last few months has however reminded me of the campaign in another way than Plouffe meant. Like the first six months of 2007, as Plouffes book The Audacity to Win acknowledges, the candidate was flat, uninspired and too professorial.
The same is true now. The president is not connecting with voters on the economy and doesnt speak about the mission in Afghanistan with the required conviction. His advisers, unlike the campaign, arent full of smart ideas. Maureen Dowd says he is like a cold shower compared to the warm bath of Bill Clinton. Politicos Arena asks where his charisma has gone.
Perhaps this is no more than too much too soon, and perhaps the sparkle will return. For Americas sake, it needs to.

Has Obama’s charisma deserted him?

No, he had checked it out like a library book...
had to return it...
obama never really had it. He’s a bit like John Kerry, stiff and cold
Wass up with the first hip-hop president.
well, if Maureen would write some snappy patter that Barry could read off the teleprompter, that would solve the problem, wouldn’t it?
A "warm bath of Bill Clinton"? My stomach just canceled Thanksgiving.
The Platitude President Peaks.
Actually, it is very difficult to come across as charismatic when you spend all of your time telling people how awful they are and apologize for every move they ever made.
Both Reagan and Clinton were ebullient. And both espoused a love for this country, all that we stand for, and all that we are (even if Clinton had to fake it).
Contrast that with Obama, who serves only one constituency: the welfare dregs and drones who make a living off of bitter victimology.
Candidate Obama was a blank screen onto which voters projected whatever they wanted him to be. President Obama is just another tired politician (and a Commie at that) who cannot possibly fulfill all those varied expectations.
He's turning our country into a big mess....and yes...it's the economy stupid...and he's driving it into the ground.
Made that coffec I drank an hour ago come back to a boil.
Here's what we have to put up with in one of our local papers, from the President of the local UAW....(a real Einstein who got his local radio show cancelled for suggesting the hanging of Pres. Bush.)
Twenty or so years later, the greatest president in the history of this country, William Harrison Clinton, attempted to revive universal health care. At that time, our economy was in the tubes from the failed leadership of former president George H. Bush.
Under the leadership of Clinton, our economy got better and heath-care worries lessened
“Warm bath of Bill Clinton”?
That’s not a bath, it’s a shower.
The difference is in where the rubber meets to road, like the more thoughtful among us said all along.
Reality seems to have dulled Mr. Obama's shine.
Amen—it’s a lot easier to brag and boast and bamboozle all the idiots—quite another to actually DO anything. BO’s been coasting and doing nothing all his life as the morons scramble to enable him. Now he’s free to destroy our country.
I am still at a total loss how anyone EVER used Zero’s name and Charisma in the same sentence.
I have never been able to see or hear him without almost getting physically ill. I would have loved it had Alan Keyes been the first black president, but then again, now that I think about it, he still could be!
I’ve never, ever gotten this. The media claimed he was charismatic, and it was automatically so, right?
Wrong. He’s icy, calculating, sneaky, and a pathological liar (as bad or worse than Clinton). “Charismatic” is the last word I’d assign to this slimeball.
Bombing Billy Ayers (the Rapin' Radical), whatever his faults, is a brilliant writer. He plucked Barack Hussein Obama (mmm mmm mmm) out of the Chicago cesspool precisely because he was pretty and would be a better front for the crackpot ideas. He ghostwrote Hussein's books and did what he could to move his career along.
All other competitors to public office were cleared out of the way (scandals got him State Senate and US Senate seats, while getting McCain nominated got him the Presidency). Now that he's President, he has to finally make decisions on his own. He's got a huge problem with Afghanistan....if he follows the recommendations of his Generals and begins a huge surge, he alienates his whacko leftist base. If he follows his natural instincts and pulls all military out of Afghanistan, the Taliban take over and no American will be safe from terrorist attack (not that dead Americans upsets Obama, but if the Americans die before the midterm elections, The dems could lose over 100 seats in the House and a dozen or so in the senate).
So, until then, he's gonna keep on having parties in the White House, play golf, and go on $500,000 dates to washington while American soldiers die overseas and there's 20% effective unemployment.
Only morons ever thought he had any.
