The CDC is stating that 4,000 Americans are dead because of swine flu. Thats an attention grabbing headline. Follow that up with the CDC saying that is 4x more than they were estimating, and you have a panic formula in full effect. Most people reading that will be scared into running out, and finding the closest H1N1 vaccine so they dont die.
But what does 4,000 deaths mean? Is it really a lot of people given the circumstances? In a nutshell HELL NO!
While the CDC attempts to institute widespread panic about a mere 4,000 deaths, in April CNN reported that the seasonal flu had already killed
get this
13,000.

Didn't the same thing happen with the 'bird' flu? (and chicken sales dropped similar to pork sales)
What should I expect from a socilized health care system?
>CDC Admits Fear Mongering On Swine Flu To Scare You<
How many of us here insisted all along that this was nothing but hype?
No. There's been less than a dozen confirmed deaths as a result of the bird-flu, worldwide. Even on the low-side, estimates of this pandemic range into the thousands, perhaps ten-of-thousands.
I loathe when blog pimpers do nothing more than post salaciously headlines to drive traffic to their site. This flu pandemic isn't a repeat of the plague or 1918, but it's not without risk and is something that should be taken seriously.
If anything, I believe the media has underplayed the threat because of their savior's pathetic handling of the situation. We have people waiting for hours on end for an inconsistently available vaccination, this administration promised would be readily available by the time flu season hit. Here we are, with rationed supplies of the vaccine, but no media outcry. If Bush was in charge, people in the media would be screaming bloody murder.
“Wolf, wolf!!!” I don't believe anything they say anymore.
If Bush was in charge, people in the media would be screaming bloody murder.
Oh so true, I'm surprised he hasn't been blamed, yet. (or did I miss it?)
I believe the fear of the bird flu was hyped too much and as you say, there were few casualties.
This flu seems to be fatal to those with other illness'. Most of the deaths seem to have the added: patient had other illness/complications.
I have not seen a comparison of this flu, as a stand alone, compared to what we would consider a 'regular' flu.
All too many of us. I have been slammed heartily for suggesting that it was over hyped
And consider this:
H1N1 is mutating, and it is now incubating in 10s of millions of human beings. Winter ain't over yet, so put the champagne away.
This government lied about H1N1 in order to make a few billion (around 7) extra dollars for the big pharma Obama contributors, but there is a much worse version on its way for which no vaccine will be available.
I’ve heard about what’s going on in the Ukraine, but not very much.
Wasn’t it some sort of hemorrhagic virus?
I can’t help thinking that what’s ailing the Ukrainians came out of a lab in Moscow.
I’m not completely disregarding it all. I do believe we should take the usual precautions.
But knowing the tendency of this administration to create or use any crisis to sow discord and panic, I have a tendency to take all their hand wringing with a grain of salt.
