There was one world leader absent for todays commemorations marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Surprisingly enough, its President Barack Obama, who found time last year to give a campaign speech there last year, which Der Spiegel summed up as People of the World, Look at Me.
The White House has cited a packed schedule, though looking at it he had nothing much on yesterday (brief chat to reporters about healthcare by far his biggest priority) and just blah briefings and a bill signing today until a metting this evening with Benjamin Netanyahu. This time, Der Spiegel has reported it as Barack Too Busy.
But Obama is, of course, making time to trot over to Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in December. Didnt seem to have too much of a problem clearing the diary for that though his acceptance of the prize and decision to give a another soaring, historical, epoch-marking etc etc speech there will be looked back on as a colossal political mistake and sign of hubris.
Perhaps Obama felt that celebrating the role of the United States in bringing down the wall would be a bit triumphalist and not quite in keeping with his wish to present America as a declining world power anxious to apologise for sundry historic misdeeds. Maybe he didnt really want to be associated with that warmonger Ronald Reagan:

Too busy on his prayer rug pointed towards Mecca.
Word is the reason Barry did not attend the ceremony was so he could attend the services in Ft. Hood.
Do I believe that? Nah. But nonetheless, this is being propagated as an excuse or reason.
What a complete putz. But then, how could he be expected to know or care anything about FREEDOM?
Lately I read only British magazines
Funny, he has time for his $250,000 dream dates, financed by the US taxpayer. He has time to fly 5 jets to campaign for the Chicago Olympics in Copenhagen, Norway. He has time for a beer with an old friend and a ‘stupid’ cop. He has time to play more golf in 6 months than his predessor did in 8 years. He has plenty of time to fly AF1 to 16 different countries on the ‘Peace through Weakness’ and “It’s America’s Fault” tour. He has time to appear on interviews on every tv channel except the Sci-Fi and Food Network TV channels.
I guess the truly ‘Presidential’ actities fall into the bucket of “Things I gotta do someday”, you know, like talk to the Generals conducting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
If Reagan were President today, he would have flown to Berlin to visit with the world's leaders AFTER he spent some time with the families and Soldiers in the Fort Hood community.
President Reagan would have used the time aboard Air Force One for briefings and to get some rest between Washington DC, Fort Hood and Berlin.
Here is the flip side to that argument..he could have flown to Berlin on AF1 today, be taking part in festivities right now, get on AF1 in 2 hours and be back before daylight in Texas.
He did it for the Olympics pitch.
Yeah, the White House/Senate/House democrats can’t seem to control the British papers yet.
besides, If it isn't all about HIM, he wants no part of it!!!!!
Ex-President Bush and Laura didn’t wait until this week. They visited the wounded in the base hospital on Friday night. No media were invited though the visit itself was reported.
Current Occupant never intended to go to celebrate the wall coming down.
I really don’t understand the confusion. Why would anything think Barak Obama would celebrate the *defeat* of communism?
The EGO was miffed that he couldn’t make a speech there while he was campainging. Protocol doesn’t allow for candidates to stump there. So he threw a hissy fit.
Remembering that he wanted to campaign at the Gate and Merkel told him NO NO NO NO
So the spoiled whiny baby is miffed.
Am so happy that he is not there to sully the wondrous accomplishment wrought by Ronald Reagan and other who valued freedom.
No surprise. The One was disapointed by the fall of the Berlin Wall. The One is marxist. Anybody still not convinced?
When Obama was told that the Cold War was over, his response was, “Good, now those capitalist pigs will finally answer for their crimes, eh Comrades?”
Gee, do you think he’ll have time to show up for the 20th anniversary celebration of the election of the first black president of the U.S.?
Yeah, I think we can count on him being there...
Bernadine Dorn
Bill Ayers
Rashid Kalidi
Raila Odinga
Jeremiah Wright
Etc....
