CHICAGO (AP) — Nearly half of all U.S. children and 90 percent of black youngsters will be on food stamps at some point during childhood, and fallout from the current recession could push those numbers even higher, researchers say.

The estimate comes from an analysis of 30 years of national data, and it bolsters other recent evidence on the pervasiveness of youngsters at economic risk. It suggests that almost everyone knows a family who has received food stamps, or will in the future, said lead author Mark Rank, a sociologist at Washington University in St. Louis.

There are some schools that give free meals to all students.

I knew a lot of college kids that got food stamps just 'cuz they could (it freed up more money for beer and pot). I guess we have to define what a "child" is in this study.

I can’t either. The only way I could see it being true is that, statistically, the wealthier you are the fewer the children you have. So, if you have a poor person with six kids they can’t support, there are more “absolute” number of children on food stamps than a wealthy family, which typically has only 2 or 3 kids at the most.

I worked as a bookkeeper for a major grocer for years, I will never forget a lady purchasing $200 worth of crab legs with food stamps. I would say the vast majority eat choice foods in comparision to our middle class family. After making the food purchase, they always managed to have cash for beer and cigs and of course they always had manicured nails.

I wonder how many of these kids parents were already on the dole when they were born?

There are definitely both kinds. As a court-appointed guardian in contact with families, I see both types. Some are actually very thrifty: use coupons, store loyalty cards, and take advantage of sales, so their money lasts longer. Some others go for the choice/luxury stuff, however. The families I know actually don't drink or smoke (probably unusual).

Where is the free Obama food at? I have to go tomorrow and stand in line along with 60,000 of my fellow supporters to get a rumored form that might lead to some more rumored free Obama money. Then I’ll be able to get those rims I always wanted because unemployment and welfare just cover my Kools and Zima.

Instead of a War on Poverty we should commence a War on Laziness.

I would gladly fight in that war. My specialty would be to go behind enemy lines and when a fat ghetto mama pulls up to the best parking spot, I'd pluck her handicapped placard from her rear view mirror and run off before she could sit on me and thus end my life.

I find this simply impossible to believe. What is the agenda here?

Look at the schools, everyone gets a trophy, mediocrity is encouraged, achievement is ridiculed. Teach the children that they DESERVE to get everything free, when they are adults they will demand to get things free. Working for your money is for chumps - why, we just tax those fools who work, and give the money to those who do nothing.

A radical does not want to change a system; they want to destroy the existing system utterly and completely, so they can put in place a new system that meets their goals. So, one way to destroy America is to mandate universal health care and bankdrupt the country, then teach the children that they are 'special' and all deserve to get whatever they want, without having to either accept responsibility, nor work for it.

“90 percent of black youngsters will be on food stamps”

Oh, yeah, the democRATS have done wonders for the black community, haven’t they?

Dependence on government, slavery with a new face.

That makes sense in a way, though the wealthier folks in my neighborhood have the most children.

Interesting. I’ve noticed the obnoxious commercials on the radio encouraging people to sign up for SNAP. I assume it’s just an extension of the EBT cards. ‘Even if you own a home and a car, you may still qualify for SNAP!’ Lovely. Let’s get everyone on the government dole.

A welfare state filled with drones will be our destruction. The more we feed them, the more they breed them.

Sounds like those stories you hear about half of marriages end in divorce. Half the marriages end in divorce because of the minority who engage in “serial” marriages

I dunno, I can honestly say I know a hell of alot more divorced people than I do couples in a first marriage. First marriages are 50% likely to end in divorce. For second marriages that stat goes up to like 75% and so on from there.

Was it a war on poverty, or a war on families? Seems like families started to unravel about the time all that came about.

ROFLOL! I've noticed that as well! Same for the "expectant mother" parking spaces that tend to be similarly abused by the same demographic.

The Navy tried to get my wife and I to sign up for WIC when she was pregnant. We qualified (only because my generous BAH and BAS don't count towards income). We actually went to the Red Cross office. Sat down, looked around and I turned to my wife and said, "Let's go. We're not going to do this." I just couldn't do bring myself to sign up for handouts when I earn, what I feel, is a salary comfortable enough to save money each month and still enjoy life.
