Virginia Election -- A Hammer and Tongs Finish
Backcountry Notes ^ | October 30, 2009 | Jay Henderson

As Virginia's off-year election nears the finish, the statewide Republican ticket has jumped out to a huge lead in the final week of the contest. What is remarkable about this contest is the hammer-and-tongs finishing push by the Republicans, which may signify the return of the Republican killer instinct -- the will to win overcoming the internecine bickering that has marked the GOP's poor performances in recent years.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post appears to have paused in its pounding of McDonnell long enough to pound Cuccinelli, on its editorial page no less.

That is indeed good news — a pounding by the Post will likely give Cuccinelli a net gain of 10,000 votes. Being the candidate of the WaPo may carry some weight in Northern Virginia, but west of the Blue Ridge it is the equivalent of a warning label.

I am waiting for the "Boo-Birds" to come out and complain that a Republican Victory isn't enough.

The whiners will be here momentarily.

The “Boo-Hoo Birds,” then. They’ve been setting Deeds et al. up for failure for about two weeks now. The flock has gathered, to pick the carcass of its own candidate.

I think the Post exists in a bubble and has no clue how that editorial might be construed in locations more than a mile from Du Pont Circle.

Well, I don’t know what a “Boo-Bird” is but victory isn’t enough for me. I won’t be happy until the Statists are forced to stand in the Atlantic with their necks at the high tide mark until they confess their sins.

McDonnell has run the smoothest campaign I’ve ever seen for a GOPer. He has consistently stayed on message, handled himself very well in debates and kept the important issues in the forefront, while refusing to let Dweebs pull him down with the personal attacks. McDonnell seems absolutely unflappable and always in control. He’s going to do a great job for us in VA.

The “killer instinct” developed by the Reps is because the candidates on the Rep ticket are all bona fide CONSERVATIVES and don’t try to “weasle” their way into being “acceptable” to the leftie lib tards..historically, people want to vote FOR someone, not hold their noses...may 2008 quickly become a fading nightmare...please God...

And after the Post’s pay-to-play scandal, no one with ANY integrity pays attention to what the Post writes - except Congress critters...redundant, I know...

the internecine bickering that has marked the GOP's poor performances in recent years.

This is the lamestream mantra to explain the losses: bickering within the party. THAT IS NOT WHY THE PUBBIES HAVE LOST. THE PUBBIES HAVE LOST BECAUSE THEY KEEP PUTTING UP CANDIDATES WHO ARE LIBERAL. THE PUBBIE CANDIDATES ARE NO DIFFERENT THAT THE RATS!

Once again: if the pubbies ran CONSERVATIVES than the base would support them and vote for them.

The WaPo jumped the shark with macaca. There is nothing but resentment towards them in NoVa. They are after all a DC paper, and as such, represent what DC wants not NoVa. Fairfax will provide majority support to the Republican ticket this Nov. Oh, BTW, Jimmy Moran is involved with an ethics investigation, don’t look for him to be high profile for the next year.

No question that McDonnell has run an excellent campaign. Virtually textbook. All three statewide candidates have done very well.
