Appalachian Autumn 2009
Backcountry Notes ^ | October 25, 2009 | Jay Henderson

We live on the western edge of the Ridge and Valley Province of the Appalachian Mountains, where the landscape is defined by long ridge mountains, with coves nestled in higher elevations and river valleys in the limestone and shale formations below. The Autumn turning of the leaves this year has been slow, giving us a long season of fall color. The images in this article are from the past week.

It is always beautiful. One of my favorite thing to do when living in Chattanooga was to look out on the valley from Lookout Mountain the weekend after Halloween.

Thanks for sharing. I am on the Kentucky/Tennessee border near Lafollette Tennessee. The leaves are really peaking here now, and last week.

Fall is my favorite time of year.

Autumn is my favorite season here in MA, though the colors don't last long enough, for me. We have several Red Maples in our back forty, and they were lovely this year. They started turning in late August, and only last weekend, started losing their leaves, because of a strong Nor'easter that came through. Another windy couple of days during this week brought down some more.

Our oak tree usually goes from green to sort of bronze, then to brown. It was green just last week, but is now at the bronze stage. We're planning to have it taken down in a couple of weeks; just waiting for the leaves to fall. It was damaged somewhat during last December's HUGH ice storm, and it's the only one that could possibly fall on the house, if it decided to go. Hubby is going to build a Solar Kiln, and we'll dry out the wood for use in our fireplace this winter!

Thanks, all. The maples were possibly better earlier in the week, but we had rain. Yet we also have maples 95% green and just starting to turn, and the oaks are coming on. A long season, maybe without a “peak,” but very pretty.

Think most/all of these were taken with the sun fighting/over powering the camera.

Sun needs to be behind the camera for better color saturation.
