Great story ;-)

Jimmy Durante: "I gotta million of 'em", lol

I remember a guy I knew (and worked with) by the name of Tommy McKnight (and I wouldn't put his full name out here except for the fact that I've been trying to find him for years, and MAYBE someone might Google him up, see this reference and then drop me a note to tell me whatever happened to him, I'm hoping that he's enjoying his senior years), anyway Tommy had a '65 Chevelle with a razor sharp body on it, no dings, no ripples, it was perfect. He had a Grumpy Box scoop on the hood (*note: refers to Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins, one of the greatest pro stock racers of all time), and the car was primed with flat black.

Tommy went down to Jack Amatucci Chevrolet and picked himself up a brand new, in-the-crate, 350 LT1 Corvette motor, bolted it up to some variety of Muncie 4-speed, and dropped it into that Chevelle and it was fast-to-the-max, I took one ride in it and it scared the bejesus out of me, lol

Tragic ending: one day we saw Tommy pulling that LT1 engine apart piece by piece (we worked together) and we asked him what happened, and he said "engine f'd up" and that's when we learned that Tommy never bothered with a timing light to set the ignition timing, he just "moved the distributor around until the engine sounded good" (NOOOOO!!!!), and he had too much ignition advance (probably in excess of 40 degrees I'd guess) and nothing short of nitro would have saved that engine with that much timing.

He eventually got it all back together. And he used a timing light to set the ignition after that, LOL

C’Mon Landru. You know I’m a two wheel guy. I have no stories to tell in or out of school, unless you want to hear about my Kawasaki Triple that ate everything four wheeled alive back in the bad old days . . .
It got 15 MPG. Had to be a record for bad motorcycle mileage . . .

Back in the day when 'CAFE' was just a neon sign somewhere, eh? LOL FIFTEEN MPG for a cycle?!?

I'm impressed!! ;)

But what makes me laugh is remembering how this one local genius with a ‘67 Camaro, 327/365 was running 12 to 1 pop-up pistons and he wanted *maximum power* so he got the bright idea to add some aviation fuel from the local air park to that Sunoco 260 & Amoco Super-Premium mix. I remember when he pulled into the station one Friday evening, and he was all grins until he tried to shut the engine off and it just kept on running, and running, and running, it didn’t stop until those TRW forged aluminum pistons began to melt and started to weld themselves to the cylinders”

OUCH!!

I guess it never dawned on your friend that we had all thought of this.......we just weren’t stupid enough to try it ;-)

I remember those! Very fast, and cheap price wise. They put out a 750 you could buy for 995.00 and they were all blue.

Yeah, but did you have a guy to pump the gas and give you Green Stamps and a free glass, when the gas was 35 cents?
We used to rummage through cars to find Green Stamp books and cigs.

"Monday again, argh..."

Has an entirely different meaning to the retiree crowd. LOL
The car dear bride bought me has Nitrogen in the tires, and since the car has OnStar they sent me a notice informing me the tires have 27PSI, need more N and for that must visit the stealership. Called 'em, talked to the service adviser & told 'em I will NOT leave the car, want it done when I come in and will wait or there'll be hell. "Randy" knows me. Knows I can be somewhat temperamental so he calmly says, Bring'er in anytime Dan, we'll fix ya up & have you out in no time, a'tall." The result of proper training LOL!!

>I drive a car now that straight out of Detroit...
"So what kind of ride is it Brother? I'm thinking a Viper or something in that category?"

No Viper I know of can attain Camry-like mileage even it it's on a trailer, mk! LOL
An LS-7 my friend, most remarkable.

>While the technology's made quantum leaps over the years, mk? The *thrill* remains the same.
"Absolutely. I remember that the major limiting factor so far as elapsed times (talking quarter mile NHRA racing now) was tire technology, you could slap a pair of M&H Racemasters on your car, sprinkle some Oxydol in the staging area and smoke 'em up a bit (the detergent would make everything a little 'stickier' for traction)..."

And that Oxydol traction resulted in uber heated rubber, *sticky* as all get out. Don't they use bleach today at the NHRA events? Haven't followed the venue in ages since the cars started looking not so funny.

"...and you could end up shaving 2 or more seconds off of your time with standard street tires."

Yes and today there're some awfully spiffy computers doing that for ya in the big HP performance cars.
For example on the ZCar there's "Traction Control" and "Active Handling", can toggle 'em [both] off go into "Competition Mode" either bringing home the checkers or destroying the car while literally breaking both your neck & finances.
Ain't that right, Braveman? LOL

"But on the street you couldn't run slicks (legally anyway lol) and you couldn't very well uncork the headers unless you really wanted to attract some attention. (I saw a few variations on the ol' lake pipes arrangement with block off plates but that was a lot o' work unless you were a real dedicated street racer."

Slicks --per se-- have always been illegal in WI. Where (~approx) do you live, mk? Loud pipes of whatever iteration here were guaranteed to earn one a ticket for being a nuisance. Of course a 5,000W stereo blasting the most vulgar sounds imaginable OTOH was tolerated for the longest time, but I digress.

"This thread has really improved over the subject title, eh?"

LOL!!!!!
It happens.

Tried explaining to my ol pal his concern was unfounded after he sent me a PRIVATE email finishing my story. Tried explaining he owed it to either reply or opt to ignore.
He chose neither.

Well I picked him over 45 years ago as my pal for life, and He's the gifted one of his family, too. LOL

I gave it some thought before I witnessed the meltdown of that 327/365, I actually had one of those primitive (by today's standards) "water mist injection units" with the idea that the H2O added into the fuel stream would cool it enough to allow for the addition of aviation fuel, but thought better of it in favor of a 'cool can' (aluminum canister with a fuel line coil running through it, packed with ice) for greater fuel density. Did it work? Dunno, but it looked 'cool'. lol

In our generation we had a honest fear of authority. Call it "respect" if you care, but it was there and one heeded it. LOL

Fellas, Braveman's a two wheel guy through & through.
BUT what he won't mention is he also acquired a li'l cherry, too.

A "Chili Pepper Red" Saturn Sky RL turbo. 265HP tucked into in a little more than a large roller skate. Cheap to run. 5 speed so very "interactive". Lightweight enhances performance. Great interior with all the niceties we've become accustomed and visually beautiful, to boot.
Problem is?
His biker pals will ostracize him if he verbally announces the car's pretty slick.
Talk about a close minded crowd of bigots. LOL

"I remember those! Very fast, and cheap price wise. They put out a 750 you could buy for 995.00 and they were all blue."

If they're what I'm thinking of? I worked with a guy who owned one. Drove it to work during warm weather as much as possible.
Thing is, IIIR it was purple with yellow striping. What about it, Braveman? What'd they look like?

Now it did fly; but, never knew they were gas guzzlers, either. Go figure. {shhhhhh} I learned something. LOL

An LS7 you say?!?!

Your bride must REALLY like you! (mine built me an old AMT model of a Ford Galaxie when we first met, first time she ever assembled a model car, and swore it would be the last, lol)

A sobering thought in the midst of all these nostalgic festivities, our 0bamunist regime in Washington would just as soon put an end to ALL performance vehicles except for the Party elite, just like in the old Soviet Union, you know what I'm saying?

The picture looks like a 64 Impala. My brother bought a used Impala convertible in December and we drove it down the main street of our town with the top down as it snowed.
The car had a two barrel carburetor. My brother, the jinx of the auto world, bought a used carburetor and manifold from a bone yard and installed it backwards on his engine.
When he fired up the car it pumped a mixture of antifreeze and oil, (poop) out the tail pipe. I'll never forget the look on his face.

The other thing my brother did was buy a 62 Chevy,(a smaller car I don't remember the model name anymore),with a 3 on the tree. He bought a floor shift for it and installed that backwards too. This was the car he traded in on the Impala. He had the deal all negotiated until the lot boy went to move the car, at which point the dealer insisted on renegotiating the deal.

An LS7 you say?!?!"

Yea, if you lived anywhere *near* north central WI you'd get some seat time behind the wheel, control the Go-pedal.
Then, we'd blab. LOL!

"Your bride must REALLY like you!"

That, or something a good deal more sinister?
After 32 years though one would've thought she'd have found an easier, if not cheaper way. LOL

HA!!
Well make no mistake about it, then.
The woman loves you, wants you around for a long time.
You got a good one, my friend. ;^)

Yes, I sure do mk. Can't recall a time when I didn't.
That said why would you guess we snagged a copy? Honestly, it didn't take a Nostradamus to understand where that SOB was taking the Republic.

Their biggest weapon has been, is and will continue to be a slow, incremental elimination of choice.
Then one day the only choice is that which they so generously, graciously provide. Slick, huh.

In the meantime, the citizens sleep.

LMAO Memories man, memories. FWIW - I packed heat for two years at the USDOJ Data Center out at Seven Locks (Fortune Terrace) when Bush I was in office. Our boss always told us to keep the joint airtight and the riff raff out because he didn't want Dick Thornburgh coming out there wondering where the hell his paycheck was. LOL

And ya had to bring up Little Tavern again when my dinner ain't even half-cooked yet, didn't ya? LMAO

You're both right. Production was from the late ‘60s to the mid ‘70s. The color schemes varied according to the year.

They were truly evil handling bikes. But they were hard to catch below 100 mph. Nothing could touch them until Kawasaki upped the ante with the venerable Z1.

The thing is, by today's standards they're average performers at best . . .

Right now, for my four wheel fun, my head's in the clouds because my butt's in the Sky . . .

I've never been much of a cycle guy, tinkered with an old Triumph in high school, but my auto shop teacher (and her car) caught my eye, and it was 4 wheels for me after that, lol

Stories??

OK, here we go. Dateline June,1965,South Bend,Ind. My dad brought home a 1965 Ford Mustang 289, 4 speed, 4 barrel, british racing green, black rag top, black interior. A week later, around midnight me and 2 buddies rolled it down the long driveway(I had snuck the keys after dinner), started it and took off. Never had so much fun in my life. Drove all over the Michigan countryside. Returned about 2:30 AM..........there was my dad, sitting on the front steps, smoking a cigarette, sipping a cup of coffee, looking calm.....too damn calm.

My 2 friends offered apologies, and ran like a thieves in the night. There I was, all alone, facing certain doom.

Dad: “ Nice car, huh?”

SJB: “Oh yeah.”

Dad: “Where did you go/”

SJB: “ Michigan”

Dad: “ I suppose Chicago was a bit too far. OK, every father should cut a kid slack one time in their life. For you, this is it. All is forgiven. If you do it again, you will die. A corpse, understand?”

A couple days later I asked why. He said he would have done it too! LOL!!
