WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives paused for a moment of silence Friday to mark entertainer Michael Jackson's death.

Lawmakers briefly interrupted a debate on a global warming bill to stand in silence and honor the "King of Pop."

Rep. Diane Watson of California rose during the debate to suggest the House "pay tribute to the culture that he has left behind, his legacy."

Watson said the lawmakers send their condolences to Jackson's family, friends and his fans worldwide.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois said the singer changed the world and he wants to "thank God for letting all of us live in his generation and in his era."

Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr., Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and those on your list had more class in eight bars than MJ ever imagined.

According to Al Sharpton’s reasoning, because of Michael we have a black president.

Agreed. Just confining the discussion to black musical singers/entertainers of the 20th century, Whacko Jacko doesn’t even come close to making the top tier. Essentially he was a good singer (especially as a kid), very good dancer (aside from his crotch-grabbing antics), and below average songwriter (at best).

He’s so far below the talents of guys like Satchmo, Ray Charles, King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown (to name but a few) they shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same discussion. But the idiocy being spewed the past few days has forced us to state the (what should be) obvious.

The Congress always does this kind of stuff. It’s basically just a gesture.

True. Here's one from 5 years ago:

Whereas Elvis Presley recorded ‘‘That’s All Right’’ at Sam Phillips’ Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee, on July 5, 1954;

Whereas Elvis’ recording of ‘‘That’s All Right’’, with Bill Black on bass and Scotty Moore on guitar, paved the way for such subsequent Sun Studio hits as Carl Perkins’ ‘‘Blue Suede Shoes’’ (1955), Roy Orbison’s ‘‘Ooby Dooby’’ (1956), and Jerry Lee Lewis’ ‘‘Whole Lotta Shakin’’ (1957)—catapulting Sun Studio to the forefront of a musical revolution;

Whereas the recording in Memphis of the first rock ’n’ roll song came to define an era and forever change popular music; Whereas the birth of rock ’n’ roll was the convergence of the diverse cultures and musical styles of the United States, blending the blues with country, gospel, jazz, and soul music;

Whereas the year 2004 provides an appropriate opportunity for our nation to celebrate the birth of rock ’n’ roll, and the many streams of music that converged in Memphis to create a truly American sound known throughout the world: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Senate—

(1) recognizes 2004 as the 50th Anniversary of rock ’n’ roll;
(2) commemorates Sun Studio for recording the first rock ’n’ roll record, ‘‘That’s All Right’’; and
(3) expresses appreciation to Memphis for its contributions to America’s music heritage.

Here's another from 2005:

S. Res. 10

Whereas Johnny Carson, a friend to the United States Senate, passed away January 23, 2005;

Whereas Johnny Carson was a philanthropist, friend, and favorite Nebraska native son;

Whereas Johnny Carson was born in Iowa, raised in Norfolk, Nebraska, and made famous in Hollywood as a late night friend to all of America;

Whereas Johnny Carson served in the United States Navy as an ensign during World War II;

Whereas Johnny Carson late hosted ``The Tonight Show'' for 30 years;

Whereas Johnny Carson was best known as America's late night king of comedy;

Whereas Johnny Carson was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood but never forgot his roots;

Whereas Johnny Carson was respected by his colleagues as a gentleman; and

Whereas Johnny Carson was bright and witty, and always set the highest of standards for his performances: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Senate--
(1) mourns the loss of Johnny Carson;
(2) recognizes the contributions of Johnny Carson to his home State of Nebraska;
(3) admires the sense of humor and late night presence of Johnny Carson in homes in the United States for over 30 years;
(4) expresses gratitude for the lifetime of memories Johnny Carson provided; and
(5) directs the Secretary of the Senate to transmit an enrolled copy of this resolution to the family of Johnny Carson.

I'm sure Ed was as much of a Gentleman as Johnny, but I guess the Senate didn't think so.

when he was alive most said he was a freak and now he is dead all of a sudden he is their hero.

pathetic

To me he was a freak back then and that is how I remember him.

Funny how a man who did not want to be black , made himself white is now the darling of the black population and how they regard him as one of them

I was outraged to see the flags flying at half mast on base today. I was sure it was for Jackson. And then I calmed down after remembering that Robert McNamara died and the flags were most likely for him.

In my opinion all I can say is “Michael WHO?”

That was precisely my sarcastic response today, when a co-worker casually asked if I was watching any of the coverage. I said, "Michael Who?"

She laughed and said, "Jacko."

I said, "Precisely. Michael Who?" She agreeably laughed again, getting my point.

People: Michael Jackson’s nanny says kids “know nothing about world”
Compiled by Lori Spencer Smith
Denver Post
Michael Jackson’s kids The nanny for Michael Jackson’s kids, Grace Rwaramba has spilled the beans about what life was like at the Jackson house to UK journalist Daphne Barak.

Grace, 42, has been with Michael for 17 years and says he fired her two months ago on a whim because she was “getting too close” to his kids. She said expected to be hired back as she had been several times before when Michael realized couldn’t handle the kids alone. She said the kids had a rough life.

She said she had heard reports lately that Michael wasn’t keeping himself clean or eating well and the house was a mess because he didn’t pay the housekeeper.

She said drugs often caused him to act strange or angry and he frightened the children. “What was most shocking to me was that the children don’t even have a teacher. They know nothing about the world. And they can’t play with other children.”

Grace says the children didn’t like the masks that Michael forced them to wear in public. She says she hopes to be reunited with the three children who are currently staying with Michael’s mother.

I’d like to see pictures. I want to know what Eric Cantor was doing during this important use of the taxpayers’ time. Because it’s just not enough that the city of LA has squandered millions of our dollars for police services and stuff so that Al Sharpton could showboat in front of a camera at today’s circus at the Staples center.

Where did this “professor” come from?

He's a FOX News regular. ....I forgot where he teaches. Lamont has criticized Obama several times recently for being too politically conservative. Pretty much says it all. He sees a racial component in everything -- a racist to the core.

that idiot is a racist and a far left bigot.
Why fox gives him the time of day is beyond me.

His snide comments, his sticking up for anything black even if it is racist towards whites disgusts me

Obama also wrote a personal letter to the Jackson family...

Are you sure that the TOTUS or Bill Ayers didn't write it instead for him? Speaking of the The First Thug, how much you want to bet his goons tried to "persuade" the Jacko Family to let The Thuggish One make a speech so that he can drone on and on about if only Universal-Health-Care-Americans lived renewable-energy-lives, Mikey would not have died.

just said the same about him

he is a racist and does not like whites what so ever.
What he seems to forget as most blacks do over this is that the freak made himself white not darker.

When I got a call form a friend today they asked if I was watching it and I said why on earth should I give my time to watch a freak, he was one to everyone when he was alive but for some reason not now he is dead.

My friend then backtracked and agreed, probably because they felt stupid for asking about it
