Some "straight talk" about Sarah Palin
Powerline ^ | 7/5/2009 | Paul Mirengoff

Posted on 07/05/2009 7:06:32 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

It's not clear why Sarah Palin resigned her position as governor of Alaska, but it must have been for one of the following reasons:

(1) there is a scandal that would have made her position as governor untenable,

(2) she couldn't take the heat that was coming her way,

or

(3) she concluded that it was in her best interests to do something other than fulfill the duties associated with the position the voters of Alaska entrusted to her.

In all three scenarios, Palin is unfit for high office, and certainly unfit to be the vice president or the president of the United States. Moreover, Palin's resignation confirms how disappointingly reckless it was of John McCain to choose the then-untested governor to be his running-mate.

And what are we to make, in retrospect, of the euphoria that greeted McCain's selection of Palin -- a euphoria that made the Republican convention seem so strange to me that, for the first time in my life, I felt I had returned to the real world when I arrived back in Washington, DC? I imagine the euphora was founded on the desperation Republicans felt as we saw the presidency slipping away, having already lost control of Congress.

There's no dishonor in this reaction; the dishonor belongs to those like Peggy Noonan who understood the situation but would only express it when they thought their microphone was off. But when we conservatives say that we need a restoration of conservative values, we should remember that one of those values -- perhaps the most important -- is sobriety.

Local office simply doesn’t count when it comes to the presidency. It just makes us look silly to act like it does.

...or she decide she can’t afford a job the cost her $100,000 a month in legal fees but only pays $125,000 a year.

Bull - I’d love to see what all these pundits and the Freepers who support this drivel would do if faced with possible bankruptcy from $500,000 in legal bills to defend against leftist supported bogus ethics complaints.

Nineteen have been filed against her and she’s won ever single one. More and more of these same complaints were in the works to break her and her family. When would you say enough and fight back?

Then I wonder what they would do if the very state they love and pledge to serve was being forced to pay 3 million dollars to investigate these same leftist supported bogus ethics complaints, with even more coming down the pike. The state was facing millions of dollars being wasted simply because of the lefts politics of personal destruction. She made the ethical move by stepping down and saving her beloved state from spending millions upon millions more dollars.

Finally we have a conservative that will fight back, who is willing to go after the leftist scum that say her husband is a pedophile who says she supports more “retards” in the US and that Palin intends to give lead paint chips out to school children.

At least support her for fighting back!! She could not fight back as Governor of Alaska.

Not really. As I said I do male mistakes as do others on here. When I find one I don’t see the need to add a snide remark.

Sadly, I’m not even talking about electability. After resigning in the middle of her term, I honestly don’t believe she’s qualified to be president. Never mind other people’s votes - at this point she wouldn’t have MY vote. And yes, I am a conservative. And yes, I love her as a person. But I have standards.

These FReepers criticizing Palin are, IMO, straight-up Republican Party hacks who'll follow the party into a well.

The things they attack her on show just how right you are. They don't attack her on issues because issues come back to bite them when someone quotes them.

I've made no secret of the fact that I've got some questions that I need her to answer before she gets my full support but those questions are on issues, these attacks are just mean spirited politics of personal destruction. At this point, all the attacks are doing is driving me to support her.

Where is it written that someone has to have in government experience to qualify them anything? Personally, I prefer someone with real world experience and commonsense values. A trait rarely found in all those Senators, etc that are touted as “the only one who can win”.

"Bob Dole resigned from the Senate in order to focus on running for President and I don't recall people saying he was crazy."

Bob Dole resigned from the Senate after securing the nomination. It was sometime in the summer, a little before the convention, if memory serves correctly. Plus, Dole served in as Senator in Kansas since the late '60s. And, let's not forget Dole was old, very, very old.

To draw some kind of comparison between what Bob Dole, just months before the election, and what Palin did years before any possible election, is a stretch, at best.

Do you truly think Sarah Palin - with two years as governor under her belt - has the experience to be president?

Yes, because:

(A) She was good enough to be chosen for VP after only 1.9 years on the job
(B) She had 16 years of both elective and appointed experience in office prior to being chosen
(C) Obama has completely re-written the rule book. If a possible foreign-born Kenyan who has worked only 140 days in the Senate, has a single, undistinguished term as a state Senator with no military, executive, or private sector experience can become President, then surely so can Palin
(D) Palin has other crucial intangibles that other potential GOP candidates simply do not have: Charisma, popularity, honesty, and a citizens bird's-eye view of the role of government. All of these make actual length of time spent as Governor irrelevant.

If Sarah Palin can credibly claim that she helped take out several Liberals in Congress -—

She will be our nominee, no matter what anyone else thinks of her!

I place value on her decision to step down. I believe she showed good judgement. It helped Alaska more than it did her, that is Sarah being selfless. Most politicians wouldn’t even consider it, they cherish their position way too much to give it up.

Yes you are right - the comparison actually favors Palin. Running for President is a full time job. If presidential hopefuls were honest with their fellow citizens they would have to acknowledge that running for the Presidency prevents them from fully focusing on their day jobs.

I see and hear that what you want in a candidate and probably a president is experience, but that is not always the best predictor of how someone will fare in a particular job/scenario. Joe Biden has years and years of political experience, and yet it scares me that he is but one heart beat away from the presidency. Mitt Romney is a very successful business man and an one time governor of the state of Massachusetts, but I still don't want him in the office of the president. I think we should look to the wisdom of the founders on this one and see if she passes their test.
1) Is she at least 35 years of age.
2) Is she a natural born citizen of the USA.

That test was good enough for them; it's certainly good enough for me.

And just so you know, while I do like Sarah Palin, I would not classify myself as a Palin supporter. To put faith in men is silly because even the best of men are flawed and will fail.

Political experience is political experience. It doesn't matter if Wasilla's population was 12 or the 7,000 or so that it was when Palin was Mayor. That's still more experience than Obama. A group of people elected her, and she had to make important decisions on their behalf. And being picked to head the Oil and Gas Conservation Committee is no small potatoes, and IMO is the equivalent of her completing out the remainder of her term as Governor.

I think conservatives had better stop thinking anything good will come of comparing Sarah and her experience to Obama and his experience. Outrageously, the media threw all standards out the window when it came to Obama. It’s a travesty. But the standards are still there for everybody else, as they should be.

Palin quit a job that was to end two full years before the Presidential election, and more than a year before the first primary. And, she quit that job three years before. I'm not buying what you're peddling.

Regardless of what her motivation was or wasn't, it looks to most people that she's cutting and running. It's that perception that will be the reality, nothing else.

Gosh, the way everyone talked about the quality of her executive experience before last November, you would think that being the Governor of Alaska wasn't really all that important. Their attitudes where- sure, she's a governor, but c'mon, it's just Alaska, not exactly the center of the political universe.

And yet, now that she has resigned from said job, apparently it was a pretty important job after all.
