It's not clear why Sarah Palin resigned her position as governor of Alaska, but it must have been for one of the following reasons:
(1) there is a scandal that would have made her position as governor untenable,
(2) she couldn't take the heat that was coming her way,
or
(3) she concluded that it was in her best interests to do something other than fulfill the duties associated with the position the voters of Alaska entrusted to her.
In all three scenarios, Palin is unfit for high office, and certainly unfit to be the vice president or the president of the United States. Moreover, Palin's resignation confirms how disappointingly reckless it was of John McCain to choose the then-untested governor to be his running-mate.
And what are we to make, in retrospect, of the euphoria that greeted McCain's selection of Palin -- a euphoria that made the Republican convention seem so strange to me that, for the first time in my life, I felt I had returned to the real world when I arrived back in Washington, DC? I imagine the euphora was founded on the desperation Republicans felt as we saw the presidency slipping away, having already lost control of Congress.
There's no dishonor in this reaction; the dishonor belongs to those like Peggy Noonan who understood the situation but would only express it when they thought their microphone was off. But when we conservatives say that we need a restoration of conservative values, we should remember that one of those values -- perhaps the most important -- is sobriety.
Yes, it is.
I’ve noticed that there is a battlebot and design studio with the same name.
He's from Minnesota:
Cheers!
I think you are on to something. Minnesota is one of only about 4 states in the US that I have not visited. I think I don’t want to go there, those people are weird.
It's very clear - Sarah has begun her 2012 Presidential campaign. Get used to it! (Thanks to Mark Levin)
Love that movie.
“You have been sleeping with my agent?!?! I thought he was only supposed to take 10%!”
Political operatives descended on Alaska last August, digging for dirt. The ethics law I championed became their weapon of choice. Over the past nine months I've been accused of all sorts of frivolous ethics violations - such as holding a fish in a photograph, wearing a jacket with a logo on it, and answering reporters' questions. Why is that reasoning so hard to understand? In this selfish world, there still are a few rare people like Sarah who think about more than just their own political aspirations. One last quote from Sarah:Every one - all 15 of the ethics complaints have been dismissed. We've won! But it hasn't been cheap - the State has wasted THOUSANDS of hours of YOUR time and shelled out some two million of YOUR dollars to respond to "opposition research" - that's money NOT going to fund teachers or troopers - or safer roads. And this political absurdity, the "politics of personal destruction" ... Todd and I are looking at more than half a million dollars in legal bills in order to set the record straight. And what about the people who offer up these silly accusations? It doesn't cost them a dime so they're not going to stop draining public resources - spending other peoples' money in their game.
It's pretty insane - my staff and I spend most of our day dealing with THIS instead of progressing our state now. I know I promised no more "politics as usual," but THIS isn't what anyone had in mind for ALASKA.
"How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it's about country. And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make."
Apostrophes make nouns possessive, not plural.
Being picked for it? If you say so. Following through on it? She resigned that job, too.
“She isnt running for anything, she already has the title she needs: Leader of the Conservative movement!”
Amen! I, too, believe that’s the driver of her decision. Yes, a lot of time remained on her term as Governor, but the goal of promoting conservatism (and conservative candidates) in this critical time is the greater calling. She knows she’s leaving Alaska in good hands in Sean Parnell. Plus, it gives Parnell a leg-up as the incumbent in 2010.
Yes, it seems flaky on the surface if Sarah’s intent is a Presidential run, but I’ll bet money it’s not on her radar screen... at least not for 2012.
I get where this is coming from. Sarah Palin has taken so much undeserved flak that her supporters immediately assume any criticism is more of the same and rise to her defense with their claws bared. But it’s a little insane and definitely not conducive to reasoned political debate. The Sarah fans on this thread have twisted logic every which way to try to make her look good, and they don’t even seem to realize they’re doing it. This senseless cheerleading isn’t good for conservatism. If conservatives can’t even respond rationally to criticism from, yes, one of their own, we’re going to be thoroughly unprepared for the next election.
IF Sarah can make lots of money on her book deal -—
Well, “National Organizer” is more impressive that ACORN/Marxist/Alinsky hack “Community Organizer”
-—And Palin won't have Terrorist William Ayers write her book for her!
If political organizing, and writing books are NOT enough experience, to be President, Obama should resign today!
Duh!
If that's true -- which it's not -- it would mean the Conservative movement is in deep trouble, and sinking fast.
For all her gifts, Sarah Palin has never exhibited the sort of intellectual heft needed by a "leader of the Conservative movement." Nor has she got anything close to the necessary experience to do anything lasting or useful for the Conservative movement. And she's now resigned from the one position that might possibly have provided her the needed platform to become more than the celebrity she currently is.
To suggest that the presidency of an abysmal amateur like Barack Obama justifies support for an amateur like Sarah Palin (albeit she is merely a rank amateur, as opposed to an abysmal one) -- is beyond silly.
We conservatives don't need a winking celebrity, we need a true leader -- somebody whose credentials are beyond serious question, and whose accomplishments and demeanor demand respect. That is not Sarah Palin.
I doubt McCain cares one way or the other about Sarah at this point. He got what he wanted last November the complete destruction of the Republican party and has now settled comfortably back into his position as a “bipartisan” Senator.
As for Romney I am sure he is watching what is going on in Alaska and is intrigued as anyone by the strange decisions being made by a possible future opponent, but I doubt he wakes up every morning and spends time trying to come up with the next way he is going to ruin Sarah’s life. Other than that I imagine he is as baffled as everyone else about whys and the wherefores of the decision.
It may come as a surprise to some on this site that the world does not revolve around Sarah Palin and that most people in or out of politics do not spend every waking moment waiting for the latest news from Wasilla. Right now she is the talk of the political circuit because of a rather baffling turn of events, but this will pass and if she does nothing else to put herself back on the front page the news media will move on to the next celebrity death, or Michelle’s newest fashion statement.
She did, and she again put integrity over politics as usual
She also came back and defeated two popular politicians from different parties and commenced to cleaning house
Look buddy. You conveniently forget that Ron Paul had legions of followers too. I know because I was one of them, and we were accused of being kooks and cheerleaders too.
And Paul wasn't a hot 40ish female, he was a wrinkly stunted great-grandfather who attracted all types of people and gave the GOP/Fox News strokes.
What Paul had, and what Palin has now is sound principles and a message united by freedom.
Find me a potential Republican candidate who will openly talk about limited government, traditional values, strong defense in unapologetic terms and I will unite behind that candidate as well
McCain and Romney staff are the “unnamed sources” who continue to badger Palin. Romney despirately needs Palin out of the way to clear the field for his 2012 run.
LOL! You're right .... Sarah Palin has become the Susan Boyle of politics.
