What's Going on with Cable News Channels?
Columbia Conservative Examiner ^ | May 30, 2009 | Anthony G. Martin

A curious phenomenon is occurring with regard to cable news viewers. Since the election those networks that have been decidedly pro-Obama are in deep trouble. Revenue has tanked and viewers have been leaving in droves. At the same time, outlets such as Fox News have been gaining new viewers by leaps and bounds. What's going on here? There is a reasonable explanation for the shift, and the news isn't good for the Obama administration.

Too many young people get their only news from Jon Stewart and shows like Saturday Night Live. I’ve had young people tell me that they are well informed because they learn of events by seeing what Jon Stewart makes fun of. Honest to God, that’s how some young people are. They don’t want to even watch a liberal serious news channel. They are convinced that Fox News is evil, even though they have never watched Fox.

Zer0 was supposed to be the 0ne who would bring us all together. But BOR has actually done something of substance to unite the right and the left. Both sides think he’s an idiot. ;^)

People still have a need for news and analysis and will seek it out.

What is REALLY DISCOURAGING is that there are polls and studies saying that many under-30s get their news from Colbert and his "Comedy Channel News". I would like to believe that this is malarky that they are feeding pollsters but Colbert's influence and ratings indicate that it is true. Actually given a binary choice I MYSELF would watch Colbert over d'Olberman any day.

We have been using Netflix for several years now. We love it.

We watched a internet movie through Netflix just last night. ( “Saving Grace”....cute movie!)

Believe me canceling cable pays for Netflix many, many times over.

We also recently canceled our cell phone and haven't had a land line for many years. We now use Skype exclusively.

We do have an emergency cell phone that we carry in the car, though.

The savings is more than $1,000 a year.

Somebody called and tried to sell me cable. I told them I just couldn’t see paying for it at the moment since I’m sure it was sure to be paid for soon by the Obama administration and I could get it for freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

He was speechless and that took care of that!

I think what is going on is that all those college kids who voted for him don’t watch news.

Agree. For all their self proclaimed technical savvy and Internet wizardry the 20 somethings are no different than most 20 somethings. They are naive and uninformed.

With the Internet though, the facts are there and can be accessed very quickly by those curious. The Reps have not yet figured this out, but there are other places that will deliver the truth.

We need to start a program that says stupid or uninformed in uncool!

“Maybe. Maybe not. He's still enjoying over a 60% approval rating by every pollster I've seen. Sure, his negatives are increasing, but that's reflective the people who didn't like him in the first place feeling even more strongly about it now.”

I think his 60% is due to people afraid to indicate a lack of support for a black. As to the negatives, those people have polled consistently and the new voters are the more indicative of former supporters turning!

Dh and I had to go to Columbus yesterday which is a democratically controlled city and made a point of trying to spot and count Obama/Biden bumper stickers. We were even caught in rush hour traffic and counted 1 sticker! Saw 3 “You can keep the change” in different forms. :)

If anybody’s got a PS3 check out “Playon” software for your PC.
It allows you to watch Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, CBS, Amazon though your PS3 onto your TV.
I’m ready to drop Comcast, I just gotta figure out how to get high speed internet without it.

I've made a conscious decision to be pessimistic about 2010, lest I face the same crushing disappointment of 2008. It's just better for my mental health if I keep expectations low.

McCain made it easy to keep our expectations low. I'm hoping we'll have a better crop of candidates in 2010 and 2012.

We like watching a lot of old patriotic war movies. Gets rid of a lot of pent-up anger.

They are convinced that Fox News is evil, even though they have never watched Fox.

Ditto Rush (all conservatives talk) is evil, even though they have never listened to him.

There's nothing like being young with a skull full of mush and totally brain-washed by the schools for which your parents PAY taxes and tuition.

DirecTV has a "thingy" where you can press the "active" button on the remote and it goes to a screen where you can customize weather for up to 5 cities, get horoscopes, check the lottery results from everywhere and it also shows the top 5 programs being watched in each time zone and nationally.

This week, for the first time ever, Fox and Friends was ahead of the other morning shows. In fact, GMA was not even in the top 5 by the time I had to go to work.

No doubt you are correct though for years I don’t think CNN and MSNBC ratings have been very good. I imagine during the election they tuned in to see their messiah but my point was, once he was elected, their interest is back wherever young folks interest is.
