Contrary to the anti gun claims of "shootouts" at every car accident and a return to the Wild West, the advent of concealed legal handgun carry has come faster than many people thought that it ever would. Being among the first to liberalize handgun laws, the state of Florida opened a veritable floodgate of changes in almost every state's laws to allow concealed carry. Of the 18 million Floridians, over 1 million have concealed carry permits. Permit holders in Florida are the usual law abiding people found in the general population of licensees, and the bane of criminals. God forbid that a thug should be shot while plying his trade. There has been a minuscule amount of revocations in all states, mostly concerning alcohol/driving related crimes. Anti gun groups joyfully point to this minority to show the flaws of legal carry. Yet, they ignore the daily news of people protecting themselves from criminals with handguns they carry legally.
39 states are currently "shall issue" states where government officials are required by state law to issue carry permits to those who have jumped through the legal hoops and background checks to get the permit. 9 states are still "may issue" states, where the state officials have the discretion to issue or not. Most of these officials require a showing of a "need" for a permit. In almost all cases, simple self defense is not a sufficient reason.
The new Orange County, California sheriff has embroiled herself in controversy by revoking many current permit holders when she came into office. These unfortunate people didn't show the "need" for one that she required in her opinion. Politically connected people always had an advantage in getting permits in this type of jurisdiction.
Just Illinois and Wisconsin are the remaining holdouts. The Illinois Sheriff's Association...

I have mine! Took almost 3 months in NC but I finally received it 2 weeks ago.
4 months in NYS and about $200 but I have it! Meanwhile, it took less than 2 weeks and $25 for my nonresident (soon to be resident) Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms.
I can neither confirm not deny having such permit. Don’t peek at my profile.
Fortunately....my permit is to carry. Anyway I choose...
After decades of taking our natural RKBA for granted, my wife and I finally jumped through the hoops and got our unrestricted Licenses to Carry here in MA. We’ve also since bought 3 handguns and joined a local sportsman’s club and regional gun rights advocacy group (GOAL).
My wife and I both have an Ohio CCW.
Obviously hasn't looked into NJ.
No concealed carry in IL yet, or else I would carry on any trip into the south side.
Got denied because my county (Onondaga, Syracuse NY and surrounding) doesn’t give any to anyone. If I lived half a mile east, in the next county, I’d have one. Sigh.
got mine! they paid me to get it. all i had to do was 6 months in the academy.
Although you can’t actually get a permit to carry a handgun in New Jersey, there is a mechanism by which one can be granted. It’s in 2C:58, after the FPIC and handgun permit stuff.
Wisconsin and Illinois have no such law. There is no law that authorizes a carry permit for anybody. Even if they felt that you should have one, no one in those two states has the authority to issue it. It simply can’t be done.
I am pretty sure that the 2nd doesn’t need a permit.
I hold my VA and FL. NH and UT are in the mail.
I live in Illinois too. Did hell freeze over yet? That’s when we will have concealed or any other kind of carry.
ONOZ! Children are killing themselves with all those guns.
Oh the humanity.

“4 months in NYS and about $200 but I have it! “
Could you imagine if there was a $200 fee to vote?
Why is this any different?
The right to Self-defense is not something you should have to buy. The 2A guarantees it.
Absolutely. Though I’m sort of worried about new laws down the pike in PA (1 handgun per month), but compared to NY’s new proposed gun laws (including an outright ban on .50+ cals, among others), PA is a much more sane state.
I have mine. It took almost three days here in New Hampshire!
