Best Army Base to live?
Me

Posted on 04/21/2009 6:15:11 PM PDT by foobarred

Wifey and I are moving to a military base. She is going active duty as an Army nurse. We are looking at Ft. Campbell, Ft. Knox and Ft. Bragg.

Can anybody make any recommendations?

Thanks!

My favorites were Ft. Richardson, Alaska, and Ft Leonard Wood, MO.

Don't even THINK about going to Ft. Stewart, GA. If the global warming believers ever decide to take the earth's temperature with a rectal thermometer, it will be inserted at Ft. Stewart. (Savannah being nearby helps to make it bearable, though!)

Actually, my second favorite was the Presidio of San Francisco.

But don’t tell anybody. ;)

I promise not to tell! It is so beautiful there. I would love to see if for myself. It’s such a shame that the moonbats have made it their own.

It was - my barracks room at DLI overlooked the Golden Gate Bridge. What is that view worth?

On the other hand, I really dislike earthquakes.

{{shudder}}

The Army doesn’t have “bases”. It has “posts”.

White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico was my favorite.

It was handed back to the German Army in the mid-90’s.

LOL...when I was a cadet, I did a CTLT assignment with an FA unit out of Hanau. Shortly after I arrived, the unit rolled out for an FTX in Wildflecken where I OIC’d a couple of ranges and got my USAREUR driver’s license. We returned to Hanau shortly before I was to return stateside, and that’s when the Battalion S3 picked up the CTLT Cadet “owners manual” that stated cadets were not supposed to operate vehicles or serve as range OICs :-)

Shoot, bubba - I OIC’d more range days in Graf that I can count, as an E-5.

I might be a tad prejudiced in this ( I have worked at Ft Knox since 1985), but Ft Knox would be my choice.

1. If your wife is making a career of the medical profession she will be near some great hospitals in Louisville: Norton's Children, Jewish, University of Louisville, and the series of hospitals operated by the Baptist Hospital group.

2. I see from your profile you are from Ohio - just a short trip up I-71 to Cincinnati.

3. Ft Knox is undergoing some major changes due to BRAC. The Armor Center is departing, but there is an IBCT (Infantry Brigade Combat Team) arriving along with several ancillary units such as engineers, military police and other support elements. The Army Human Resources Command is also moving there. This equates to a large increase in both the military and civilian population. Along with that increase is a new hospital on post.

4. Location, location, location. Ft Knox is close enough to Louisville to have those highlights, if you like them, but yet rural enough to have great hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. If you are a shooter, Knob Creek Machine Gun Range butts up against the post. It is site of the greatest machine gun shoot in the US twice a year.

Augsburg too. I still keep in touch with some German friends there. They said it’s just not the same without us. They were very good to the Army folks who were stationed there.

I was not a fan of Fayette-nam but I did like Ft. Campbell. I’ve never been to Ft. Knox.

Try to avoid anything in Texas. Should Texas secede, you’ll just have to pack up the boxes again.

I could get used to a view like that. Earthquakes would be a problem for me too. Hubby flew out for an interview in Northridge, when we left the Army. We kept wondering why that name sounded soooo familiar.
