Drill Sergeant Joe B. Fricks Rules For A Gunfight
1. Forget about knives, bats and fists. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. Bring four times the ammunition you think you could ever need.
2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammunition is cheap - life is expensive. If you shoot inside, buckshot is your friend. A new wall is cheap - funerals are expensive
3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.
4. If your shooting stance is good, you’re probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.
5. Move away from your attacker and go to cover. Distance is your friend. (Bulletproof cover and diagonal or lateral movement are preferred.)
6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a semi or full-automatic long gun and a friend with a long gun.
7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.
8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. Yell “Fire!” Why “Fire”? Cops will come with the Fire Department, sirens often scare off the bad guys, or at least cause then to lose concentration and will.... and who is going to summon help if you yell “Intruder,” “Glock” or “Winchester?”
9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on “pucker factor” than the inherent accuracy of the gun.
10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.
11. Stretch the rules. Always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
12. Have a plan.
13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won’t work. “No battle plan ever survives 10 seconds past first contact with an enemy.”
14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible, but remember, sheetrock walls and the like stop nothing but your pulse when bullets tear through them.
15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.
16. Don’t drop your guard.
17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. Practice reloading one-handed and off-hand shooting. That’s how you live if hit in your “good” side.
18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. Smiles, frowns and other facial expressions don’t (In God we trust. Everyone else keep your hands where I can see them.)
19. Decide NOW to always be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.
20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.
21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet if necessary, because they may want to kill you.
22. Be courteous to everyone, overly friendly to no one.
23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.
24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than “4”.
25. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. “All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket.” At a practice session, throw you gun into the mud, then make sure it still works. You can clean it later.
26. Practice shooting in the dark, with someone shouting at you, when out of breath, etc.
27. Regardless of whether justified of not, you will feel sad about killing another human being. It is better to be sad than to be room temperature.
28. The only thing you EVER say afterwards is, “He said he was going to kill me. I believed him. I’m sorry, Officer, but I’m very upset now. I can’t say anything more. Please speak with my attorney.”
Finally, Drill Sergeant Frick’s Rules For Un-armed Combat.
1. Never be unarmed.
Any gun that works is better then no gun. A mag full of 22 place into the proper places well not do anybody any good. I know of several cases of 22lr’s killing people with single shots.
if this is what she likes and will shoot it. It is a lot better then a stick or rock.
1. Take lessons so you are both comfortable with the weapon. At most ranges, you can rent guns so your wife can try a few out before deciding which she likes best.
2. Go to the range regularly, so you are both comfortable with the weapon.
3. Make sure your wife is mentally willing to use it, a predator breaking into a house may sense a person’s unwillingness to use the weapon and take it.
4. Pick a revolver. All you need to do is aim and shoot. Any weapon where you have to put in a clip, pull back the slide, take the safety off, etc, leaves one with a whole lot of steps to do to protect oneself. If you use the gun all the time (see #1 and #2 above) and keep it cleaned and maintained that may be a different story. But the last thing you want is to have a semi-auto jam at the critical moment.
5. Good luck. Better yet, be prepared.
Lightsabers have been banned in our county until the burning ban is lifted. They had a bunch of problems with them last spring.
People have been hit with 357 mags and still keep coming.
Unless your wife is a expert shootest under extreme circumstances.
So will a CCI Mini Mag.
Get what you like and paint it pink. That’s if it’s a gun for you. If it’s for her, let her get whatever she wants and she’ll be much more fond of it than otherwise.
Needs to be something that a lady can easily control. I would think something like a S&W K-frame 38spl, with a 4” bbl. Simple to operate, nothing to jam, goes bang every time, big enough to be useful yet mild enough for small hands to use.
My .02
And shoot hollow-points.....
Next question?
... without losing control.

She went to the range and shot a .22 and a .38cal and then my 9mm glock. She hated my glock and couldn’t control the .38 special, but the .22 was more ‘’comfortable’’ for her. Thanks for all the input amigos. Now dont’ forget to attend one of the Tea Parties next week.
They still sell ammo for it.
Congratulations, on taking responsibility for your family’s protection.
Buying a gun is like buying a pair of shoes. If they don’t fit, you won’t wear them no matter how cool they look.
Whatever you end up with, practice, practice, practice.
Also strongly suggest taking it to an indoor range and if they’ll allow it, fire in the dark without hearing protection at least once. It’ll give a sensory sample of what it’ll be like if fired indoors “for real.” This is important because chances are the bad guy won’t wait around for you to don proper eye and ear protection. Just one shooter’s opinion anyway. :)
“They still sell ammo for it”.....
When they have it to sell.
A Walther PP in .22 would do fine. Also the Hungarian copies are good. One of my all time favorite pistols was a Beretta model 70 in .22LR but it is single action.
After watching how that little .22 Iver Johnson took down people when that nut tried to assassinate Reagan, gave me a new appreciation for the .22lr.
Sure it is not the best caliber but I wouldn’t say it is ineffective.
