Tobacco Runners On U.S.-Canada Border
Chronicle Herald ^ | 04/05/09

It is a huge black market trade, and it is growing rapidly. * * * 95 per cent of the smokes come from clandestine factories on reserves, mostly from the New York State side of Akwesasne, the centre of a massive spiderweb of smuggling operations. The riverside Mohawk community of Akwesasne straddles three borders, Ontario, Quebec and New York State, and it is a smugglers' paradise. * * * The Mounties say there are 105 organized crime groups in Canada involved in the tobacco trade, from mom-and-pop operations that only deal in cigarettes to violent groups, including the Italian mafia, Hells Angels, Asian street gangs and Jamaican posses. The Mounties can point to a growing list of busts involving gangsters and illegal tobacco. The most recent was March 12, when they charged 22 people, including two Hells Angels and two Kahnawake Mohawks, in connection with a cigarette and methamphetamine ring around Quebec City. This kind of thing makes even the Mohawks who are involved in the business nervous. The Mohawks of Kahnawake have mixed feelings about the trade. Although it employs many people on the reserve, they don’t want gangsters on the streets. In Akwesasne, police have seized AK-47s and rocket launchers, several people have been killed during police chases with smugglers, and Hells Angels ride down the street in their colours.

of course I am totally against smoking, when its near me, and totally against any illegal drugs.....

however, it doesn't bother me that the govt isn't getting its tax revenue from cigarettes.....infact, I like the idea in a way....

The price of a pound of tobacco went from $1 to $25...

Was that the price per lb or was that the tax on a lb?

Maybe you should spend less effort obsessing over who is a troll on what you wrongfully believe is your private message board, and more time preventing organized crime from exploiting the U.S.-Canada border. If you are such a firm believer in open borders, then I think you may find message borders other than Free Republic more to your personal liking. Sorry, but I will not apologize for believing in the sovereignty of the U.S. borders, and I wasn’t aware there was an exception for drug-running Canadians.

As you go through your daily routine and make note of who you see using tobacco—smoking, chewing, dipping—it's plain that, with a few exceptions, tobacco taxes impact the poor and the semi-functional. Most of these people will pay for their cigarettes before they buy groceries. Of course this group doesn't include the cigar connoisseur.

Don't try to tell me what I believe, Newbie. I know that this is JimRob's place, and as a Conservative, I am welcome here.

Oh, really? Like your blog? That's where your posts come from.

....I wasn’t aware there was an exception for drug-running Canadians

Now I'm a drug runner?

For you, definitely, I think I only have a year under my belt. Shame on me for my rudeness in not getting to welcoming you 7 years ago!

OK, my favorite Canadian joke: (Stop me if you already heard it!)

A guy walks into a bar, and sees a hockey game on the TV. He comments “Those Canadians, there’s only two types, hookers, and hockey players.”

The bartenders face turns beet red, and says “Hey, buddy, my wife is a Canadian” and the patron snaps out his reply “Oh yeah, what team does she play for?”

:)

ROFLMAO Too cold for the skeeters with their landing lights and the noseeums to land near AtlasStalled yet? Maybe a herd of Icebacks with hockey pucks could head his way, I hear pucks like hosers are deadly weapons after all. (sarcasm intended)
