Comic legend Jackie Mason is railing against accusations of racism following a performance in New York Thursday, where he referred to President Barack Obama as a "schwartza."
Celebrity gossip site TMZ.com confronted Mason with a camera on Friday over the flap. The celebrity gossip site reported that that the literal translation of "schwartza" in Yiddish is "black," but added that some say "it's a disparaging reference to African Americans, akin to the N-word."
Mason told a TMZ cameraman, "(I'm not going to answer) these stupid questions because you're trying to multiply me into a racist. I've called (people) a lot worse -- the Jews and the Italians -- I don't worry about what I call people and if it bothers you you're a moron. Everybody knows I'm a comedian and I don't dislike anybody."
Calling into question the jokes of black comedian Chris Rock, Mason, 77, suggested that he was the victim of double standards.
Mason said, "Why don't you ask him what he said about white people or the names he called George Bush why don't you ask any black person? Why do you only ask white people? White people have no freedom of speech."
The exchange became more heated as the camera rolled on. Following some expletives, Mason said to the cameraman before closing his limousine door, "You're a lowlife trying to pretend I'm some kind of racist."
In a non-scientific poll of TMZ users, 76 percent of more than 20,000 votes sided with Mason.
May the schwartz be with you Jackie.
Ditto...
“Mason said, “Why don’t you ask him what he said about white people or the names he called George Bush why don’t you ask any black person? Why do you only ask white people? White people have no freedom of speech.” “
And this is why I love love love Jackie Mason and subscribe to his videos on youtube. His rants are priceless!
Ganif a.k.a. gonif a.k.a. ganev: A thief, a crook. An untrustworthy person, particularly one who steals outright or over-charges.
Of course it was. There were so many African-Americans hanging around northern Europe in the 10th century when Yiddish originated. OY!
I didn’t think it right for Jackie Mason to use the term Obamessiah, so I offered something that starts kinda like it...
Fearless leader shall not be mocked by those on the right, no matter what the term used is.
Gotta love old school spine.
If I showed up at a party and was greeted with “Hey white guy!”, and every reference to me was made to “the white guy”; that could be racists without the word “white” being a racially charged term.
Why was pointing out that 0bama is black important to the statement Jackie Mason was saying? If it was relevant then the charge is just stupid. If it was interjected without merit, well then what was the motive for including that descriptive term?
hey Jackie, you dummy...get it right:
he’s a half schwartza
;) ;) ;) ;)
Ah, yes, the famous Katie Couric "Some Say..." -- one of the most obvious, and childish, Liberal tactics.
In Spanish, “negro” and “chino” and regularly used as mere descriptives, “chino” being anybody who appears Asian. The words mean nothing pejorative at all.
Colonel, USAFR
It hardly matters what the word literally means. It is common PC practice to delegitimize words that were once widely acceptable, for no good reason. Some common labels slip into derogatory territory with time, I guess. More often, people just have to complain about something.
Polite whites once called black people “negroes,” later “coloreds”. Now either name would get you stabbed on certain street corners. I’ve even heard a few black people call the ultra-PC label “African-American” offensive. No doubt it is, considering most black people have to go back quite a few generations to get to the mother-continent.
Then there’s “midget,” which is a fine case-study, I say. For what does midget mean in and of itself? I have no idea. All I know is that’s what you call really short people. Near as I can tell, the only reason midget became offensive is because that’s the word people had been using for some time. How big of a persecution complex do you have to have, as a group, to find a word offensive simply because it’s what people call you?
Enter “little people,” which struck me as much more offensive than midget when I first heard it. I guess it was intended to tell us that midgets are people too. But for me, it went a long way toward implying that midgets aren’t full people, that they’re only half a person at best. Ah, well. It’s their perogative, I guess. Only midgets have a right to determine what offends them. Never mind intent. It’s all up to the supposedly persecuted minority.
I figurerd while we’re on the subject of politically incorrect Jewish comedians...
Well, he is.
Why does Don Rickles call people a hockey puck?
“Why was pointing out that 0bama is black important to the statement Jackie Mason was saying? If it was relevant then the charge is just stupid. If it was interjected without merit, well then what was the motive for including that descriptive term?”
The whole point of the article is that Mason is being hounded simply for using the term. And as you say, there is nothing wrong, in and of itself, with describing you as white. The context—i.e. whether or not Mason used the word to make a larger racist point—is not the issue. If it were, we’d be talking about whether or not Mason’s routine was racist, or whether or not Mason was making a racist joke. So far as I can tell, the controversy is solely about his use of the word. Wake me when they charge him with being a racist beyond that.
The rolling (in time) usage of “black”, “colored”,”African-American”,...allows the race hustlers to keep people off-balance, since you can easily be accused of being “racist” if you use the “wrong” terminology (whatever that may have changed to this week compared to last).
In this case, it is in fact easier to hit a moving target.
Jackie Mason is a HOOT!!!
