Great posts man...Funny too. Here's a more 'serial' quote..

“ Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action”…. General George Washington -

I am trying to find a favorite.

I think Tom Jef got it best, but Twain hits the mark well.

As usual, Reagan was spot on:

11. Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate t. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Mencken is alive as P.J. O'Rourke. One of my favorite H.L.Mencken quote is when he said the only thing wrong with capital punishment is that it has never been adequately tried.

"It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice, if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood; if they be repealed or revised before they are promulgated, or undergo such incessant changes that no man who knows what the law is today can guess what is will be tomorrow."

-- James Madison, Federalist no. 62, February 27, 1788

"We have seen the mere distinction of colour made in the most enlightened period of time, a ground of the most oppressive dominion ever exercised by man over man."

-- James Madison, Speech at the Constitutional Convention, June 6, 1787

______________________________________

"I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents."

-- James Madison, 4 Annals of congress 179 (1794)

"There are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations."

-- James Madison, speech to the Virginia Ratifying Convention, June 16, 1788
