Rep. Tom Tancredo Says Jindal Speech May Have Ended His Chances for Presidency - Video 2/26/09

Here is video of Rep. Tom Tancredo assessing the performance the other night of Gov. Bobby Jindal in giving the GOP Response to President Barack Obama's address. In short, Tancredo says Jindal's content was great but his delivery was lousy. In fact, he says it was so lousy that his performance may have "put the last nail in the coffin" on his chances of becoming President. Tancredo says Jindal is a great intellect but did not show himself to be a "leader" in his speech.

Tancredo believes Gov. Mitt Romney is best positioned now to lead the GOP forward in 2012. Tancredo made the comments during an interview at CPAC today, February 26, 2009.

As I said the other night, I believe Jindal's content was great but his delivery certainly could have been better. But I just don't think that speech will end Jindal's chances for the Presidency. He still has a very bright future, and could be the next GOP President in 2016 if not in 2012. Remember, everyone laughed off Bill Clinton after his disastrous speech at the Democratic Convention in 1988 that went on and on and on. But four years later, he became President. Four years is a very long time in politics. I would not count Jindal out just yet. . . . . (Watch Video)

That’s what happens when you are appointed the sacrifical lamb.

Between Steele and Jindal, the overall impression is of a desperate Republican party, flailing away in panic, putting in a black man and an Indian guy in these prominent spots, mimicking and aping the Obama, and ultimately, having really nothing to say.

Anyway, the nomination is Petraeus’ to refuse.

To Jindal’s crecit - he at least has accomplished one mission and held office before arriving on the scene.

I liked his response when asked to run in 2008 saying “he had more work to do in Louisiana before considering vacating that office”..... the guy has class.

And further - we at least know his background - available to check out and review.

Of Obama’s ?????? It’s anyone’s guess where he has been!

I'm not convinced about Sarah Palin though I like her, but from the get go her speech making skills were in evidence. Her first speech in Dayton was outstanding and her convention speech was great. Jindal did not have this laid on him at the last minute. He's an intelligent articulate guy, as evidenced in his appearances on MTP and FTN, but his effort was horrendous.

He had a deer in the headlights look. His voice quivered and his posture was weird. Much more effort should have been given to this speech. During Clinton's time one GOP response consisted of Christy Todd Whitman speaking from the New Jersey Assembly Hall, before a full house, with flags and Jersey Troopers flanking her. It was an impressive spectacle and boosted the GOP's as well as her image. Jindal's performance was poorly executed and more poorly planned. How do you spend six minutes of a 20 minute speech praising Obama for his American achievement? By the time he got into his opposition most people would have thought he was giving Obama a testimonial. Planning, perfomance, reactions. Poor all the way around.

If he can speak for 2 MINUTES without notes, then he’s a MILLION times better than the Obamessiah at extemporaneous speaking.

IMHO Tancredo is “jumping the shark” with his comments on Bobby J - Rush gave a fair analysis of this speech earlier in the week

I am surprised that Tancredo is not going after Jindal on his not being natural born citizen.

Neither of Jindal’s parents were citizens at the time of his birth.

Well, I’ll go out on a limb and say that if the economy continues to tank under Obama and his approval ratings drop to around 30% AND we have a 3rd party candidate split the dem vote, Jindal would have a pretty good shot in 2012, just as Clinton did in 92. Heck, any Republican would probably win under that scenario.

Jindal did not speak with the zeal of a patriot.

And what exactly does "speaking with the zeal of a patriot" mean? Yelling a lot and calling everyone a RINO?

Sorry, but you're basically doing the same thing the Obamakids are - asking for your version of a rock star, looking for style over substance.

I am so sick to death of the shallowness this country. Intellect means nothing but by god if you speak well, then you are superior. disgusting

“Does ANY Republican officeholder even realize the seriousness and the real danger of Hussein’s rule?”

I think not. Elected officeholders are way too timid. Gotta get reelected don’t you know...

IMO, we need that unknown leader. I just hope that he or she is not an elected official, but will start a conversation with elected officials. First sentence, “Gentlemen, it’s time you grew a set....”

I don't either like or dislike Jindal, as I know very little about him at this point. However, to base whether or not he will succeed in the future on the basis of one speech is ridiculous and speaks volumes about how superficial politics has become. Michael Jordan had games during which he couldn't buy a basket. Those games didn't define his career. I didn't see the Jindal speech, but anyone can have an off night in public speaking. I give public presentations fairly frequently, and sometimes I'm very happy about the way it went, and sometimes I feel like I couldn't convey what I wanted to and thus lost the audience. We all have good days and bad days. Make your judgment about Jindal based on more than one speech.

I'll settle for rational, measured speeches with substance over American Presidential Idol, ANY day.

I think Tancredo endorsed Romney during the primaries.

Oh, please. Let's try to bury another conservative politician, just like they tried to do with Palin. Yes, the delivery could have been better, but it wasn't as bad as people are making it out to be.

Well, what's going on with Tancredo is that he's trying to prepare the ground for one last run in 2012 by his man Mitt. If he can kneecap Jindal with GOP voters early on, it removes one formidable rival.

We need to tell Tancredo "no thanks." Nominating a RINO in 2008 didn't get us anywhere, and nominating another one in 2012 will have about the same effect.

I didn’t see the speech, so I don’t know how badly he did. On the other hand, people need to get past the idea that a good speaker makes a great leader. It simply isn’t always so. But, I don’t think Americans want a leader. At least they don’t vote like they do. They want someone who will take polls and follow the direction the polls lead.

I agree he wasn’t zealous, but was a 10 minute rebuttal speech after the new President’s first speech to Congress really the right time to go on the warpath? There will be plenty of time for that, but I don’t know if tuesday night was the right setting for Jindal to become William Wallace, shout out “Freedom!!!!” and lead the troops into battle. Especially in front of a national audiense like that. I’m sure if he was speaking at a GOP convention or CPAC or some other partisan gathering, he’d be more on point, but in that settting you can’t really expect him to start tearing down the barricades and breaking out the flamethrower.

I could care less about his religion. However, he IS supporting a thinly disguised Liberal. That is of more concern.

Make your judgment about Jindal based on more than one speech.

Exactly. Two years from now, nobody but nobody is going to give diddly about how Jindal did in one weekly GOP response to the President.

Can anyone on here tell me how the Democrat who delivered the "reponse to the President" weekly speech this time last year did? Or even who that Democrat was?
