It was an interactive poll, so an older audience was probably underrepresented.
These heroes were named spontaneously. Those surveyed were not shown or read a list of people to choose from. The Harris Poll was conducted online among a sample of 2,634 U.S. adults (aged 18 and over) by Harris Interactive® between January 12 and 19, 2009.
The Hudson River pilot scored higher than God, which will most likely end in a nasty debate over who should get credit for landing that plane.
Nota bene: the preponderance of politicians. An interesting comment on our times. The traditional religious heroes Mother Teresa, Billy Graham, and Gandhi are still in the mix. But where are all the scientists? Wheres Jonas Salk? Even Neil Armstrong has dropped off the list. Athletes, too, are fading as heroes Michael Jordan and Venus Williams failed to break into the top 23.
Just out of the running: George Goober Lindsey, Vampira, the Green Lantern, and Tommy Hunt of The Flamingos.
Question for Christians: Is it a mild form of blasphemy to throw Jesus into this mix to begin with, as if he were heroic on more or less the same human terms as
Bill Gates?
