Federal gas tax to increase $2.40/gallon?

If New York Times columnist Friedman has his way, gas taxes will go up. Way up. He wants to slap an additional $2.40 per gallon in taxes on top of the 18.4¢ you already pay.

“Today’s financial crisis is Obama’s 9/11,” Friedman wrote. “The public is ready to be mobilized. Obama is coming in with enormous popularity. This is his window of opportunity to impose a gas tax. And he could make it painless: offset the gas tax by lowering payroll taxes, or phase it in over two years at 10 cents a month.”

Do the math. 10 cents a month for two years. That’s an additional $2.40 per gallon...

We’ve got to work very very hard to counteract this in 2010. Conservatives unite!

I have heard some conservatives suggest that this might not be a bad idea because it would keep pressure on to provide our own natural resources. They think that the price of gas alone is what would get more drilling, shale exploration, arctic exploration, etc.

Most of us understand why this is false. Adding tax dollars to gas to inflate the price does not add profits to the oil companies. Profits to the oil companies is what drives expansion. It would have the exact opposite affect. It would drive demand down making the economy worse.

Shell Oil recorded a loss in the last quarter. We didn't hear much about that, huh? BIG OIL makes about $.05/gallon. Local and federal government make far more.

Who gets windfall profits again?

Are you also in the mood of encouraging their overreaching?

Do you think that people will finally open their freakin’ eyes?

They might, but they might not.

Friedman is nothing more than a Marxist who also happens to parade as a newspaper columist. If Friedman enjoys paying gas taxes this high ? The he should stay his as* in Europe and leave us alone.

On anything else, maybe not. But a $2.40 tax on gas would certainly open people’s eyes.

Obama does not have enormous popularity at all.

It’s now down to average.

Whats really important is momentum. O is moving down. He's lost about 15 points (if he was really that high) in 2 weeks. If he lost half that in the next 2 weeks he'd be down to 54%

He could be below 50% after 2 months. Which would be hugh. I'm series.

I imagine that by July (6 months in) most of the Independents who voted for The One will have buyers remorse. Most of the Dems are too stupid or partisan, to ever be disillusioned.

Aren't these the same people who scream that sales taxes are "regressive", and "hurt the poorest"?

HintheH is a person who doesn't have any payroll taxes (or minimal) to begin with, supposed to be "offset" on the gas (sales/excise) tax?

WOMEN AND MINORITIES HARDEST HIT!

Washington Elites and Bush Obama Administration propose bleeding minorities; further eroding families!

Where is the OUTRAGE?!?

“The public is ready to be mobilized. Obama is coming in with enormous popularity."

Obama is enormously divisive and has already failed by nominating a stream of career criminals for cabinet level posts.

People who do not drive should not even think about making laws regarding cars.

People who do not shoot guns should not even think about making laws regarding guns.

And on, and on......

Anyone who thinks they’re not getting taxed enough by Big Government can just write a check to the U.S. Treasury.

Sounds like this works out well if you live in NYC, have no kids, and make enough so that an increase in commodity prices doesn’t really cut into your discretionary spending.

Shell Oil recorded a loss in the last quarter. We didn't hear much about that, huh?

Probably because they didn't have a loss.

Royal Dutch Shell’s fourth quarter 2008 earnings, on a current cost of supplies (CCS) basis, were $4.8 billion compared to $6.7 billion a year ago.

You are probably thinking of BP.
